Use an Onboard Acquisition to set up on Io , then peakup. Obtain one exposure with HRS at 1216A (centered on 1208A) medium resolution mode after target acquisition. Obtain observations when Io is immersed in the plasma torus. Observe Io near orbital elongation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. 1216A required spatial resolution required ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Proton aurora most likely to occur when Io is immersed in the denser positions of the magnetospheric radiation belts - i.e., the plasma torus. Io must be near orbital elongation for maximum Dopper and visibility. Jupiter must be near quadrature for maximum Dopper wrt geocorona. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark time needed to minimize geocoronal Ly-alpha emission.
