Abstract The primary scientific objective of this proposal is to continue the investigation to determine the state and long-term evolution of the dynamical and cloud regimes in Jupiter's atmosphere, with special emphasis on the region between +/- 15 degrees planetocentric latitude. This objective is an essential part of a larger research effort which includes the acquisition and analysis of data from the Galileo orbiter and probe, and the analysis of ground-based and Voyager data. The goal of this effort is to understand the general meteorology of Jupiter's visible atmosphere and the nature of the transport processes that occur within it. Filters and observing sequences have been chosen to allow us to evaluate the extent to which the WFPC2 can be utilized to characterize the spatial and temporal variations in horizontal motions and to discriminate vertical structure. An observing sequence consisting of multicolor observations for two rotations of the planet is requested in March-May 1995 for the post-come t impact era. Due to the red-blindness of the Voyager and the limited data rate from Galileo, HST/WFPC2 is the prime instrument to characterize the state of the Jovian atmosphere before and during the Galileo probe entry epoch. The observat ions in this proposal will help to define whether the probe data are typical of the latitude of entry (6.57 +/-0.5 deg.planetocentric latitude) and the extent t o which they can be extrapolated to other latitudes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We propose to use the PC1 chip of WFPC2 with filters F953N, FQCH4P15 (893nm), F814W, F673N, FQCH4N15 (619 nm), F555M, F439W, F336W and F218W to obtain multicolor images of Jupiter and to derive cloud displacements and color ratios as a function of viewing geometry for selected regions of the planet. Because the PC1 chip has a field-of-view of 35 X 35 arcseconds and the diameter of Jupiter is 44 X 42 arcsec. at opposition, we are proposing to target the planet at the equator but to offset the PC1 chip in longitude toward the limbward side of the planet and rotate the telescope in order to get as much of both poles as possible and to keep the equatorial limb of the planet away from the edge of the chip. Because Jupiter rotates 0.605 degrees per minute or about 58 degrees per HST orbit, selected regions can be viewed at high and low incident and emergent angles in two consecutive orbits. From this data we can: 1. obtain zonal wind speeds in near-IR, green and methane (892 nm) and obtain reliable error estimates and 2. derive color ratio measurements of equatorial emission angles of 84, 72, 55, 26 and 14 deg. (a cloud parcel that is 84 degrees from the CM at the beginning of imaging in an orbit will be at 72 deg 20min later, at 55 deg 13 HST orbits later, and at 26 and 14 deg in the next HST orbit. This yields a cosine of the emergent angle sampling of 0.11, 0.31, 0.57, 0.90, 0.97.) We are requesting two 6-orbit sequences separated by 20.8 (13 HST orbits) late in Cycle 4 (March-May 1995) to define the state of the atmosphere before the arrival of the Galileo probe in December 1995. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The pixel scale of the planetary mode of the WFPC2 is 46 milliarcseconds. Using the 1993 opposition as a typical case, the range from earth to Jupiter was 4.454 AU on March 31, 1993. At this range a PC1 pixel will subtend 149 km at the subearth point on the planet. Figure 5.2 of the WFPC2 Instrument handbook indicates that more than 50% of the light from a point source will fall within a 2 X 2 pixel area. Although this will smear small clouds over several pixels, if the noise within the images is low enough that we can navigate and map our images and obtain cross-correlations between the two sets (separated by 19.26 hours) that are accurate to 3 pixels, we can detect changes in the zonal jets on the order of 6.5 meters/sec. There are few clouds in Jupiter's atmosphere that move in the high speed jets that have high enough local contrast to be visible at groundbased resolutions and still remain unchanged for long enough periods of time. It is necessary to obtain subarcsecond seeing for sequential viewing at 8 day intervals to match accuracy of zonal wind measurements attainable with the advertised resolution of the WFPC2. The Voyager data provided us with zonal wind measurements more than a Jovian year ago. Although HST/WFPC1 data were obtained late in Cycle 1 and 2, data nearer to the time of the Galileo probe entry, our first in situ sampling of the planet in December 1995, are needed to characterize the state of the equatorial region and establish the zonal wind profile as a function of latitude during the Galileo epoch. The current state of the Galileo high gain antenna is such that very little dynamical information will be obtained. Current data management plans for imaging during the Galileo mission reveal that it will be very heavily weighted toward characterization of satellite surfaces. A small amount of imaging of the daylight side of Jovian atmosphere will be done at very close range, where the narrow angle camera spans less than 15 degrees of latitude on the planet. These opportunities will be used to obtain cloud brightness as a function of incident and emergent angles in an effort to understand the vertical structure of the atmosphere, especially the probe entry site. The observations that we propose here are highly complementary to the Galileo data. The data rate and onboard data storage of the Galileo orbiter preclude acquisition of a inbound global movie. WFPC2 can provide the highest resolution global maps of the planet that will be available before and spanning the time of the Galileo probe entry. b. Justify the amount of exposure and estimated spacecraft time requested. Computed exposures are less than 2 minutes for any of the filters. The requirement of continuous longitudinal coverage to optimize derivation of zonal winds and the need to obtain a range of incident and emission angles recommends that we plan a sequence that uses contiguous orbits. For an object as bright as Jupiter the readout time of the chip dominates the spacecraft time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We are requesting time-critical observations to the extent that we want to acquire the observations near opposition when it is possible to rotate th e telescope to optimize the polar coverage. We will request a waiver to retrieve only the PC1 data. Our plans call for more than 7 exposures per orbit. The WF chips will be underexposed by a factor of 5 for objects with surface brightness similar to that of Jupiter (the Galilean satellites) and are so short that serendipitous discoveries are unlikely. A waiver will allow us to reach our goals and relieve the load on the data downlink. We reserve the option of changing filters after preliminary analysis of the WFPC2 data. Quality of flat fields, noise level versus rotational smear, etc. will be considered in an effort to select the best filter set and exposures to optimize the March-May 1995 data set. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We have no special calibration requirements Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Specify which of the above programs are related to this proposal and summarize the scientific relationship, completion status, and main results of each. The Cycle 1 dynamical data set for Jupiter was not obtained until December 1992 and is currently being analysed by the team. Pointing difficulties have forced the postponement of the Cycle 2 observations of Jupiter to June 1993. The Cycle 3 archival data set was delivered in late April 1993 and funding has not yet arrived at NMSU. Deconvolution optimization studies have progressed during Jan-May 1993 and systematic reduction of Cycles 0-2 will be carried out during the summer of 1993. The Cycle 0 and Saturn part of Cycle 1 and 2 are related to this proposal in that they have allowed direct comparison of temporal variability of the two giant planets. These data have been reduced and published. From a comparative point-of-view the most significant result from these data is the derivation of zonal winds from broad-band green and 889 CH4 images which shows variation of zonal winds with height at low latitudes. These results are consistent with midlatitude values derived from the Voyager infrared data using the thermal wind equation which is not valid at low latitudes. c.
