Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Michal Simon SUNY STONY BROOK USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract We propose to determine the masses of pre-main sequence binaries selected from our lunar occultation survey of the Taurus star-forming region. We plan to use the Fine Guidance Sensors to measure the apparent orbits of the binaries. Since the distance to the region is known the apparent orbits will yield the total masses of the binaries. This proposal is for the third year continuation for our program previously approved for Cycles 2 and 3. No data has been taken yet so we can only summarize our goals and plans. The first observations are scheduled for September and October 1993. We will use those results to update the target list as described in Question 4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5316 PI: Michal Simon Proposal Title: MASSES OF PREMAIN SEQUENCE STARS CYC4MEDIUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michal Simon 2988 USA Laurence G. Taff 3470 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. This program requires the FGS Interferometers operating in Transfer Function Mode. We plan to use the clear filter to take advantage of the red spectra of the stars and the S20 response of the FGS photomultipliers and to use the 2/3 aperture stop to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio. For binary orbit determination we require that a given system be observed twice per Cycle, as far apart in time as possible. The hierarchical triple HV Tau will require two observations: one of the close components and the second with the full 5 X 5 arc sec aperture of the close components relative to the third component. Our Cycle 2 observations are, at this writing, scheduled for September, 1993 and late October, 1993. They will be directed at the targets originally proposed: DF, DI, FF, HQ, HV, and GN Tau. In Cycles 3 and 4 we will DELETE from the original target list those systems found by Cycle 2 observations to be unsuitable for orbit determination and to REPLACE them by ZZ Tau, HK Tau G2, Elias 12, and SVS 1849 (as described in our approved Cycle 3 proposal). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The results of our ground-based survey (refs. 4 and 7) by lunar occultations and imaging provide the source list for this program. Lunar occultations of a given object occur infrequently so orbit determination by ground-based occultation observations is not practical. Moreover, the components of the binaries we propose for FGS observation are too close to be resolvable by IR speckle interferometry, and too close and too faint to be observed by visible light speckle interferometry. The systems considered here are simply too faint for the present generation of ground-based Michelson interferometers operating in the visible and IR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The Taurus Star Forming Region is a dark cloud so the surface density of potential Guide Stars is low. Finding suitable Guide Stars for our targets has proved to be a problem and has delayed the scheduling of our Cycle 2 observations. An additional complication is that, as noted in Question 3, we need to observe our targets as far apart in time as possible to facilitate orbit determination. For the targets scheduled for observations in late 1993 (DF Tau, DI Tau, FF Tau, GN Tau, HQ Tau, HV Tau and HV Tau/C), Denise Taylor of the STScI staff has determined that Guide Stars are available in the interval aproximately Days 240 to 300. The Guide Star problem may arise again for the new objects, ZZ Tau, HK Tau G2, Elias 12, and SVS 1849 that we may introduce as replacements in Cycle 4 (see Question 3). We note this now to alert the STScI staff and to ask that we be notified as soon as the problem arises. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. MS (PI) and LGT (Co-I) are the investigators for the HST program "Masses of Pre- Main sequence Stars", approved for 3 years, assigned time as GO 3842 and GO 4789 in Cycle 2, and as GO 4568 for Cycle 3. The present proposal is the continuation request for the third cycle, Cycle 4. The Cycle 2 observations are scheduled for Sept., 1993 and late October, 1993. LGT participated in the data reduction of SAO observations 3004 and was a Co-I on the engineering proposal 3368. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The SUNY SB Astronomy Group maintains a cluster of VMS and Ultrix workstations that operate the usual arsenal of astronomical software. MS draws on the expertise of Frederick Walter (a member of the GHRS team) for HST-related advice and Deane Peterson for advice pertaining to binary star analysis. MS has regularly guided PhD students and plans to involve a graduate student in this work. LGT has full access to the software required for working with FGS data. ST provides support of Taff's research time and computing needs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
