Abstract We plan to observe the unique QSO HS 1700+6416 with the HRS with the LSA in low resolution in the range 1150 to 1650 A, where useful spectra are not yet available, with the aim to detect further EUV quasar absorption lines: NeIII 489, NeIV 543, NeV 568, 480, CIII 386, NIII 374, Mg VI 402 in several high z Lyman limit systems (LLS). We expect an enhanced neon abundance Ne/C ~= O/C ~= 0.5 if the composition is extreme Halo like and originates in SN II. We further wish to measure OIV 608, OV 629, NIV 765, CIII 977 in the LLSs z = 0.8642 and 1.1572 in order to determine O/C and N/C abundance ratios for a comparison with values obtained already for high redshift systems like z=2.433, 2.1678, 1.8465. Finally, we want to detect HeI 584 in the LLSs z = 1.1572, 1.8464 and 1.725. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We plan to take HRS-spectra at low resolution (~= 2000) with the LSA + G140L covering with two exposures the wavelength range 1150 to 1650 A of the high redshift (z=2.72) quasar HS 1700+6416. This QSO is brighter by a factor of 10 than any other known high redshift QSO and offers the unique chance to study the EUV. 2 Exposures are necessary to cover the yet missing range: 1. GHRS + LSA + G140L LAMBDAc = 1300 texp = 270m 2. " LAMBDAc = 1600 texp = 270m ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Spectroscopy at a resolution of 2000 in the UV of a 16th magnitude QSO can only be done with HST. The QSO has been studied with the FOS in the range 1200 - 3270 with spectacular results on quasar absorption. However, the range LAMBDA < 1650A was only covered at a S/N ~= 4, insufficient for absorption line spectroscopy. Only the HRS with the LSA in low resolution has the capability to do spectroscopy of the rich QSO absorption spectrum below 1650 A. The object has been observed also with a deep ROSAT PSPC exposure (detected ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. P 2288: Spectroscopy of the UV brightest known high-redshift Quasar (PI Reimers, CoIs Hagen, Engels, Groote, Wamsteker, Clavel) Main results: 1. The QSO continuum, cut into steps by 7 optically thin Lyman limit systems, increases to a rest wavelength of 320 A. 2. Several hundred absorption lines in 13 z-systems with many "new" ions are seen (HeI, OV, OIV, OIII, NIII, NIV,...) 3. The LLSs show O/C enhancements by factors 3 to 5, similar to extreme Halo composition. 4. The shape of the ionizing background radiation could be determined. Publications: 1. D.
