Abstract We will obtain deep WFPC2 images of bright, nearby quasars to investigate the optical morphology of their host galaxies. The high angular resolution of HST will allow one to perform a number of quantitative measurements of the morphology and luminosities of host galaxies. The proposed HST observations will reveal the relationship between the properties of the host galaxy and quasar luminosity (both optical and radio), and how quasar host galaxies differ from field or cluster galaxies. The sample consists of 13 quasars with z < 0.3, M_V < -23 (Ho = 100), and |b| > 35. Each quasar will be imaged in a Wide Field Camera CCD through the F606W filter. The objects in this proposal span a range of quasar luminosities (up to M_V of -24.5; Ho = 100) and redshifts (0.09 < z < 0.265). Three of the 13 quasars are radio-loud; the combined GTO/GO sample of 22 objects contains six radio-loud quasars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. All exposures should be performed during dark time in order to image the faint surface brightness features of the galaxies. All objects will be imaged once with F606W. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based observations cannot give a clear picture of the morphology of the host galaxies because of the effects of seeing on the intense light from the bright central sources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Dark time is required to reveal low surface brightness features of host galaxies. We plan to acquire ground-based photometry of the targets as close as possible to the time of the HST observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark time is required to reveal the galactic features of low surface brightness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Deep 5 meter exposures will be obtained for comparison with ST images and for testing data analysis programs. These ground-based observations will also be used to determine the galactic companions of the bright quasars.
