Abstract The interstellar dust in galaxies is an important tracer of the global abundance of C and heavy elements. The outstanding signature of dust presence and its properties is the strong extinction of stellar emission in the UV, with a broad 2200A bump and increase at shorter wavelengths. The steepness of the FUV extinction has large effects on the ionisation and molecular chemistry of a Galaxy. As well as being an important clue to a galaxy's global evolution, observations of nearly every astrophysically interesting object must be corrected for extinction to study its intrinsic properties. The UV extinction curve is different in the Magellanic Clouds, which have different metallicity from our Galaxy. Our study of UV spectra of hot stars in M31 and M33 with IUE and HST-FOS indicated a UV extinction curve different from the average galactic in both M31 and M33. The foreground galactic halo extinction towards M31 and M33 also differs from the standard Galactic, so that this needs to be established as well as the halo and disk extinction of M31 and M33. This proposal addresses the problem, by obtaining FOS spectra of reddened and unreddened stars in M31 and M33. For these we have accurate spectral types from good quality ground-based spectra, and UV flux measurements from UIT. We also request WFPC2 parallel imaging to reveal other reddened stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. For each galaxy, we wish to observe Galactic halo stars, low reddening stars in the distant galaxy, and reddened stars. The exposures will be with G160L and G270H of FOS/BL. The halo stars and low reddening stars require exposures of 10 minutes or less with each grating. The reddened stars have low flux at the shortest wavelengths, where the G160L grating is least efficient. Thus, we require longer exposures for these stars: 40 minutes. The total time, with overhead is about 5 hours for each of M31 and M33. The UV flux is known in most cases from previous IUE spectra, and for the highly reddened stars from UIT photometry, the latter with a total maximum uncertainty of 20%. From the UV fluxes and the instrument handbook we estimate the exposure times given in the OSF. The parallel exposures will fall within the spectroscopic ones. These will be with the F555W, F300W, F656N and the F160BW filters. These will allow us to locate UV-bright st We need to cover the whole 1200-3300A range, with the driver being adequate S/N at the shortest wavelengths. Spectral resolution can be degraded to 20A or more, and our criterion is to get at least 400 counts in 50A. Therefore we need for each star two spectra, with G160L and G270H (both blue, as the crucial part is the efficiency at the shortest wavelengths). We will use the 1 arcsec aperture, and we took care to select stars that appear clearly isolated. The acquisition has worked perfectly for all our five previous observations, so we feel even more confident after refurbishement. In M31 and M33 we wish to take advantage of each sufficiently long pointing to obtain parallel WFPC2 images of M31 and M33 fields, in 3 or 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Only HST is able to obtain sufficient signal in the far UV of the faint reddened stars in our program. We have done the necessary preliminary work of identifying hot stars with known spectral types and suitable reddening. This work is ground- based imaging and spectroscopy and UV photometry from UIT data. We have a continuing program of work in all these areas. We are thus uniquely in a position to carry out the proposed investigation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. NONE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. NONE Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The ultraviolet extinction towards our sample stars will be determined by comparing the observed fluxes between the foreground and reddened stars empirically, and also we will compare all stars with model atmosphere flux distributions and with standard galactic stars as an independent derivation. Cardelli et al (1992) find that UV extinction towards early type supergiants can be determined as accurately as for main sequence stars. This is crucial in M31 and M33 as only supergiants stars are bright enough to be observed. In this study, we will observe and compare both lightly and heavily reddened stars members of M31 and M33. This allows us in principle to distiguish possible differences between halo and disk extinction in these galaxies, and also has the advantage that a better spectral match is likely for supergiants of a certain spectral type in the same galaxy. Also, any foreground reddening to the galaxy will be similar for the two stars and will largely cancel out. The data processing and reductions will be done with software available at our various institutions. All the co-authors have long experience of treating these data and of studying UV extinction properties. We are very familiar with CCD ground based images and UIT images, and with photometry of stars in crowded fields. We have also worked with WFPC1 data, so we feel confident in being able to exploit the information from the parallel images fully. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. The targets in M33 and M31 are too faint to be measured in the conventional way on the GASP frames. We have measured their positions in astrometric CCD CCD exposures taken by us for this purpose and reduced them relative to GSC stars. This worked perfectly for all the five stars previously observed with FOS in M31. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). All co-investigators have available at their Institutes full capability for reducing and analysing the FOS data, and all the complementary ground based, UIT and IUE data that we in fact have already exploited to the full possible extent to prepare this research project. We have moreover access to the IUE standard stars database that is still unpublished, where IUE data of the comparison stars (needed for one part of the analysis) can be found already re-extracted and re- calibrated with the most accurate procedure available to date, since this was prepared by one of us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
