Abstract HST will provide the first opportunity to make a detailed, quantitative study of the proto-planetary disk around the nearby A3V star, Beta Pic. WFPC2 and FOC/COSTAR are expected to obtain high-resolution pictures of this system. Even with HST, however, there are severe observational challenges calling for a detector with an enormous dynamic range. In addition, the detector must have a high UV sensitivity and zero red-light leak in order to determine the composition of the dust disk from UV reflectance spectra. In order to meet these daunting observational requirements, we propose an innovative observing technique involving the GHRS. Only the GHRS has the following combination of features which are essential for exploring circumstellar disks: opportunity for narrow-band UV photometry, a huge dynamic range, excellent photometric characteristics, and the capability of imaging spectroscopy. We will capitalize on these benefits to probe the central cavity of the disk, estimate the grain size and composition of the dust, map the circumstllar gas, and search for evidence of planet-sized bodies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. LINES 1-9 acquire the star, Beta Pic, with A2 and get an A2 image of the central 1.72" region LINES 10-19 get sample LSA spectra ut derive F(LSA)/F(SSA)=f(wavelength) and attempts to detect SiIII 1206 emission from the central disk LINES 20-29 get SSA spectra of the star over wavelength interval, 1530-3100 A. Together they provide the baseline against which disk abs, em, scattering is detected. LINES 30-39 get SSA spectra of the disk at r~2" from star ut derive albedo=f(wavelength) & look for absorption by gas LINES 50-69 get SSA spectra of the disk at other distances from the star (r=1", r=3"). LINES 100-105 get a 3x1 mosaic of the beta Pic disk in N2, in order to map the presumed dust cavity ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST is needed for its high spatial resolution, access to UV. GHRS is needed for its UV sensitivity, no grating scatter, extremely high dynamic range. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The A2 and N2 mirrors incorporate geocoronal lyman alpha. To avoid the geocoronal emission, you need to take the A2 and N2 images in the DARK. It is necessary to get these data by August 1994 so that they can be described at an international meeting, "Disks and Outflows from Young Stars" on 6-9 Sep 1994 in Heidelberg, Germany. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. The surface brightness of the disk of beta Pic will be measured differentially, i.e. from the observed image - the image of a point source. It is therefore necessary to have HIGHLY ACCURATE PSF's in the A2 and N2 mirror modes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
