Abstract SN1978K, in the barred galaxy NGC 1313, is the ONLY example of a very young supernova remnant of KNOWN age which is X-ray bright. The X-rays likely arise from the blast wave encountering the circumstellar medium. We propose to study the ultraviolet line emission from this remnant, which in such a young remnant, should be exceedingly rich, especially in \[Fe II\] lines. Other lines give additional density and abundance diagnostics. The UV spectrum is expected to evolve rapidly over the next few years. We hope to study the age-dependent development of the remnant in an external galaxy. SN1987A in the LMC and SN1993J in M81 will undergo the same phenomenon about a decade or so from now. A study of SN1978K now will shed light on issues to be resolved with observations of SN1987A and SN1993J. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We request blue and red FOS spectra of the target, SN1978K, and its immediate surrounding H II region. This requires a pointing at SN1978K to obtain the blue and red FOS spectra, and an offset to obtain the H II region. A finding chart will be available in the October (10?) 1993 Ap.J. Based on the finding chart, the direction of the offset does not make a difference to the science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST is needed for the ultraviolet capabilities unavailable from the ground. IUE is sufficiently small that even a very long exposure (15-20 hours) produces a low signal/noise (~3-5) spectrum. We have argued in the justification that a good quality spectrum (signal/noise > 10) pays larger science dividends than a low signal/noise spectrum. IUE is simply too small to deliver a reasonable signal/noise spectrum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. EMS, EC, RP: office space, computer, disk space, access to IRAF/STSDAS already available, so no additional resources are needed. MD: All resources required will be provided by Mt Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories. He has a SPARC II which will be used in the modelling. IRAF/STDAS is maintained on this machine. SR, LSS: radio and optical observations can be obtained and analyzed with available resources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
