Abstract A set of observations of Jupiter with the GHRS Side 1, if available, will be used to investigate the processes responsible for the molecular hydrogen emission in the Jovian equatorial atmosphere. The observations will span a complete Jovian rotation to determine if there is a correlation with the "Lyman-alpha bulge". As they will be made at a time close to solar minimum, it will be possible to determine, by comparison with data from both Voyager and the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (at solar maximum), if these emissions are controlled by the solar EUV flux as has been hypothesized. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. A set of straightforward integrations with grating G140L of the GHRS and the Large Science Aperture is requested. Two long exposures centered on the equatorial region of Jupiter will be taken, one at the System III longitude of the Lyman-alpha bulge, the other 180 degrees away. In essence, the two exposures will cover one complete rotation of the planet. The other exposure will be taken of the Jovian north polar aurora at 60 degrees north latitude and as close as possible to System III longitude = 180 degrees. Each observation will be made at the same grating setting covering the wavelength range 1210 - 1490 A. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The electroglow problem has been studied extensively with Voyager and IUE data sets but cannot be resolved with them because of the poor spectral resolution of the former and poor detector efficiency and contamination by long wavelength grating scattered light for the latter. The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, which flew on the Astro-1 space shuttle mission in December 1990, is well suited to the problem but the reflight on Astro-2 is now manifested for November 1994 at which time Jupiter is too close to the sun to be observed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The two long equatorial exposures must be centered at System III longitudes of 90 and 270 degrees, respectively. The north polar aurora observation must be made at a time when the sub-Earth longitude of Jupiter is 180 +/- 30 degrees. This is to ensure that the LSA, placed at 60 degrees N latitude, will include the auroral oval. Dark time is required to avoid contamination by terrestrial oxygen emission at 1304 A. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests.
