Abstract Ground-based spectroscopic observations by Rubin and Kenney taken at high velocity resolution and high spatial scale show that about 20 percent of the 80 galaxies observed in the Virgo Cluster have rapidly rotating, kinematically distinct cores extending only a few arcsec. These galaxies span Hubble types E through Sc. We propose to image a sample of seven of these galaxies with the WFPC2, each in two colors (F555W and F814W). One galaxy with strong line emission (NGC 4536) will also be imaged in H-alpha. In addition, we will image 2 "normal" galaxies in the Virgo Cluster to act as a control sample. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5375 PI: Vera C. Kenney 3900 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Exposures will be made for 7 galaxies using the F555W (="V"; a short 60 s exposure followed by a 500 or 600 s exposure ) and F814W (="I", same combination of exposures) filters to image the high surface brightness cores. Only the exposures 500 s or longer will be CR-SPLIT. In addition, similar observations will be made of a sample of 2 "normal" galaxies (NGC 4569 and NGC 4651) to be used as a control sample, as suggested by the TAC. Finally, NGC 4536, an Sc I with strong core emission will be imaged at F658N (H-alpha redshifted, 2900 s) and F675W (red image to use for continuum subtraction at H-alpha, 300 s). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Since we are primarily interested in the bright inner regions of the galaxies, the exposure times can be relatively short, and the scheduling efficiency is actually determined more by the overheads of guide star acquisitions and readouts than the required exposure time. Hence, while exposure times of just 300 seconds would be sufficient for most of our requirements, a combination of one short (60 s) and one long (600 s) exposure provides the maximum scientific return with only a very modest increase in the actual amount of spacecraft time used. The short exposures will show the brightest inner structures without danger of saturation while the longer exposure will burn out the centers but show the fainter outer features, including the globular clusters. These exposures will reach impressive detection limits, based on our cycle 2 observations of NGC 7252 which reached a detection level of V = 23.5 mag in 1400 seconds. At this level we were also able to pick up faint spiral structure and ripples that were 10 percent fluctuations on a background which varied from V = 15 - 20 mag/arcsec**2. While the throughput actually goes down about a factor of 2 for the WFPC2, the amount of light within a resolution element of 0.1 arcsec goes up by a factor of 12, due to the improved PSF. This means that the overall gain with WFPC2 will be about a factor of 6, or 2 magnitudes, hence our detection limit will be V = 25.5. With a distance modulus to Virgo of 31.0, this means we could detect objects down to Mv = -5.5, 5.5 magnitudes dimmer than we did in NGC 7252 Our calculation for NGC 4536 shows that 37 % of the continuum in the F68N filter will be from the emission line, and a S/N of about 300 can be expected in the brighter regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. A related snapshot proposal was awarded supplemental time in cycle 3. However, at present it is very unlikely that any of these will actually be observed.
