Abstract We define a complete sample of z ~ 1 3CR radio galaxies and quasars selected to identical extended radio flux-density limits and propose to obtain deep WF camera imaging in order to determine and compare luminosities and morphologies. These observations will be complemented and enhanced by a ground-based optical and IR program, currently in progress, to study (1.) a larger complete z ~ 1 sample of 3CR galaxies and quasars, of which the proposed HST sample is a subset; (2.) a sample of quasars with a similar redshift distribution but lower radio power; and (3.) a sample of z ~ 0.3 quasars matched in radio power to this second z ~ 1 sample. The HST observations will give us new and important insights into both the nature of the optical-radio alignment effect seen in high-redshift radio galaxies and the viability of unified models for radio galaxies and quasars. Description of proposed observations. We propose to obtain WFPC2 images of our sample to a constant proper surface brightness (~24.5 m(AB6220) at z = 1.0). For objects in our sample with z < 1, we use the F622W filter; for those with z > 1, we use F675W. These filters sample the essentially line-free continuum near a 3200 A in the frame of the source. For the 5 quasars in our sample, we also obtain exposures on a nearby bright star as a PSF reference. In all cases, we use POS TARG to dither the image among 4 positions at the corners of a square 10.5 pixels on a side. We thus hope to minimize the effects of any detector defects on the order of a few pixels in size, while also mitigating somewhat the undersampling of the PSF by the WF mode of WFPC2. Our individual exposures vary from 900 to 1400 s; for our brightest quasar, the peak pixel will receive a charge ~6 times CCD saturation. Charge bleeding should be confined to 3 or 4 pixels in 1 or 2 columns. We will operate with the low signal-chain gain setting (7 e/DN) in order to to maximize the count resolution; for our brightest quasars, this mode will typically result in the loss of ~4--6 additional pixels near the quasar peak. The exposure times and numbers of exposures are based on calculations of S/N taking into account the (1+z)**-5 dependence of surface brightness (in wavelength units), readout noise and dark background in the CCD, system throughput, and sky-brightness dependence on ecliptic latitude. For our fiducial surface brightness, our listed exposures give estimated S/N per pixel in the range 2.6 to 2.9. We have made two changes from our Phase 1 proposal plans: first, we have dropped 3C22 from our target list because the high Galactic extinction along the line of sight prevents us from obtaining a S/N level comparable to that for the other members of the sample in a realistic exposure time; second, we taken an implicit recommendation of the TAC and included PSF standard observations in conjunction with each of our quasar integrations, so that we can accurately subtract the quasar nucleus. Our original assumption, as stated in our Phase I proposal, was that modeled PSFs would be sufficiently accurate for a corrected HST, but we agree that a cautious approach is safest. In that spirit, we have specified that the PSF stars (which are in the quasar fields in any case) be taken in close time proximity to the quasar observations, to avoid problems with possible time variability in critically-aligned optical elements, such as the highly-aspheric correcting mirrors in WFPC2. If it becomes clear that this level of is overcautious, and guide-star constraints allow us to keep to our plan of placing all of our objects at the same positions on WF3, we could scale back to a single PSF standard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. As described in the Scientific Justification (Question 2), we are pursuing a vigorous ground-based program of optical and IR observations of a larger complete sample, of which the proposed HST targets form a complete subset. The HST observations are required to give the spatial resolution necessary to (1.) make a detailed comparison between the luminosities and morphologies of the radio galaxies and the quasar hosts, and (2.) isolate the flux from the quasar nuclei to a few pixels so that reliable quantitative results can be obtained on the quasar host galaxies. None, as long as good flat fields are available for the F622W and F675W filters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Three of our objects (3C217, 3C280, and 3C289) now have shorter exposures planned in the same filter in the GTO program of Malcolm Longair (this program was placed on the GTO list after the Phase 1 deadline). We have made arrangements with Longair to share data on these three objects for our respective programs and to collaborate on any results of particular individual interest for any of them. Details of which observations will be made by which program have still to be firmed up; we have assumed that all observations of these objects in the F622W filter will be made as part of our program. We have kept Nolan Walborn informed of our correspondence with Prof. Longair. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. 3538 "UV Spectroscopy of Extended Emission-Line Regions around QSOs" PI: A. Stockton CoIs: E. Hu, J. MacKenty (Susan Ridgway has been involved as a Graduate Researcher on this project). There is no direct relationship between 3538 and the present proposal. We have obtained all of the ground-based data required for the project and are currently meshing the HST and ground-based datasets. No publication yet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). In addition to access to the general computing facilities and network resources of the Institute for Astronomy by both investigators, ANS currently has a Sun SparcStation 1+ with 40 MB of memory, 3.3 GB of disk storage, and an Exabyte tape drive. This workstation is expected to be upgraded to a SparcStation 10/41 or equivalent with NSF funds within the coming year. SER, in addition to having access to the PI's workstation, is one of 3 users of a SparcStation 2, on which she has 1.6 GB of dedicated disk. The scientific program as a whole involves a combination of HST and ground-based observations. ANS has access to all observing facilities available to the University of Hawaii, including the 2.2-m UH Telescope, 15% of the time on the 3.6-m CFHT, the 3.0-m IRTF, and the 3.8-m UKIRT, and 10% of the time on the 10-m Keck I Telescope, on which regular scheduling is expected to commence early in 1994. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
