Abstract We propose to obtain spectroscopic diagnostics of the gaseous disk observed around the star Beta Pictoris. The high quality data obtained at the unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of the GHRS during our Cycle 2 observations under ID 3482, allowed us to clearly strengthen the idea that both the changes in spectral line shapes as well as the very presence of CI, CIV and CO simultaneously observed in the gaseous environment of the star may be explained by the evaporation of many kilometer sized bodies when approaching the star. In effect, bodies evaporating at larger distances produce an important gaseous disk responsible for the observed stable narrow absorption features in mainly neutral species (CI,FeI,MgI,CO) but also in more ionised species (CaII,MgII,FeII,even AlIII), while other bodies, falling almost directly onto the star, produce highly time variable absorption features only seen in the ionised species (CaII,MgII,FeII, AlIII,CIV). The purpose of this proposal is to study in detail the precise nature of these two different gaseous components. To link all our observations together and with previous studies, we will organise simultaneous, multisites ground based observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. Our aim is to investigate the chemical composition and physical conditions in the beta Pictoris disk. Long exposures in the range 1500-1650 A will be performed with G160M and SSA to investigate the CS lines of CO, CIV, CI and AlII. Two additionnal ECH-A spectra at 1544 and 1660 A will be taken if Side1 is available to investigate in more details the CIV and AlII lines. ECH-B spectra of MgII, AlIII, ZnII, SiII, MnII, NiII, and FeII (ground and metastable levels) will be performed. As already mentionned, these ECH-B spectra will be performed with LSA. Our experience with the HRS data is that it is mandatory for our scientific purpose to have better calibrations than the standard ones. We manage then to perform calibrations before each science exposure. Our experience with last data is that they can be interpreted into much more details if they have been taken at the same time. Indeed, days and sometimes hours time scale variability occur in those lines. As we manage to compare abondances of different elements and in the case of FeII, abundances of different levels, we need to have the data taken as close as possible in time. Also, the observing order is important. Note: this observing plan slightly differs from the one in phase1, according to the recommendations of TAC panel (no repeated exposures) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Although a lot could be done from the ground, as we have demonstrated,it is clear that having access to essentially only the CaII H and K lines is a strong limitation. Having also used IUE to complement our observational approach we know exactly what line should be observed. It is clear however that IUE presents too severe limitations in both resolution and S/N to allow further progress. The number of diagnostic lines in the UV and the presence of line pairs with large differences in oscillator strength will give us a detailed view of the density, temperature, composition, and distribution of the circumstellar material, particularly during the variable events. It is clear that any ground-based or IUE observing plan could never give us such informations and our recent observations with GHRS prooved to be very efficient. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Scheduled observations with the GHRS should be made several months in advance in order to organize the simultaneous ground-based, multisites observations from various observatories: first in Chile, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For that reason the observations should be scheduled when the ground-based observations are more favorable (the period 1st--20st of December 1994 is then the most favorable). Because of rapid changes (days time scales) in the lines, the observations should be performed as a time-sequence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Our dec 92 observations with HST showed that we really need a calibration better than the routine calibrations. Calibrations will then be performed before each science exposure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Our plan is to obtain from the STScI the calibrated science data which is provided as the output of the Routine Science Data Processing (RSDP) and Calibration Data Base Software (CDBS) software at the Institute. We have excellent computational facilities at our home institutions. The numerical analysis needed to analyse and interpret our data is straightforward and relatively simple, and the total amount of data to be processed is also very modest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Simultaneous ground-based observations will be done during the HST ones. Our December 1992 experience showed that it is feasible to reserve the ground based telescope time ahead of time in the December period, and then try to schedule the ST at the proper time. Because we succeeded once, it is reasonable to think that for the next observations we will proceed in a similar manner provided the fact that scheduling is prepared well ahead in time. December 1994 will be the most convenient period. The US administrative PI is J. Lissauer. We require 90000$ funding for the Cycle 4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work.
