Abstract Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse) is a large, bright supergiant star with an extended a tmosphere. We propose to image Alpha Ori in the ultraviolet continuum and chrom ospheric emission of Mg II using the FOC, and also to spectroscopically image th e star and its extended atmosphere in the Mg II emission lines in order to estab lish the ultraviolet diameter and limb-darkening, to discover the extent of the chromosphere, to detect surface and atmospheric features and to determine the dy namics of the atmosphere. This program will utilize the capability of the HST after correction by COSTAR t o produce the first direct, resolved ultraviolet image of a star other than the Sun. These observations will showcase the unique capability of HST for high res olution imaging and provide more direct constraints on the physical processes re sponsible for the structure of extended atmospheres than has been possible previ ously. Obtaining a high-fidelity image of Alpha Orionis in the ultraviolet will establish a new area of stellar physics research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5409 PI: Ronald L Gilliland Proposal Title: DIRECT UV AND SPECTRAL-TOMOGRAPHIC IMAGING OF ALPHA ORIONIS CYCLE 4 HIGH ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ronald L Gilliland 3470 USA Andrea K Dupree 2166 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. FOC direct images. Using crossed F220W+F278M+F4ND will provide an image in whic h about 18% of the counts arise from MgII emission with a diameter of 0.2-0.6", 77% of the counts come from continuum within +/-200A restricted to a diameter of about 0.1" and a 5% visible light leak from wavelengths beyond 3000A. Use will be made of the 128X128 IMAGE mode for its superior dynamic range that will allow linear response imaging of the photospheric contribution at about 2.4 counts/s/px in the central 40 pixels. The more extended MgII yields 0.034 cts/s /px if extended over a 0.4" disk. The F220W+F253M+F4ND exposure will provide a pure continuum image at half the count rate of F278M. This will be used to allow clean separation of the photosphere and chromospheric images, i.e., off and on band of MgII. A point spread function calibration is specified using a warm white dwarf. This high S/N PSF determination with central pixel count rate of 2.3/s from a point source will be essential for supporting direct modeling and deconvolution analyses of the Alpha Ori observations. GHRS tomographic images. Through use of the SSA aperture as an occulting edge a series of spectra taken with successive telescope offsets can provide all of the information necessary to reconstruct a spatially resolved image at each ind ependent spectral resolution element. Taking 24 quarter-stepped spectra offset by 0.0275" along each leg of a "+" centered on the star will provide resolved strips 0.72" long with the 0.22" width of the SSA. The corners will be mapped with a second 2 line SPATIAL SCAN, and combining information from the FOC images and GHRS tomography will allow robust interpretation in 2-D. Target acquisition is dominated by continuum light so there is no problem obtaining a well centered set of telescope pointings. A point spread function observation will also be acquired using a well-calibrat ed UV standard to calibrate the GHRS spectral tomography. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Not needed for phase II. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. As stated in the Phase I proposal we have been awarded (AKD) observing time for a period spanning 3 years (through April 1995) in order to continue the monitoring of Alpha Ori in the ultraviolet. The ultraviolet spectroscopy program is accompanied by optical photoelectric photometry at Villanova Observatory and radial velocity measurements at the McMath Telescope at KPNO. Thus we will be able to determine the state of the star when the HST observations are made, and request that they be carried out contemporaneously with the IUE monitoring program. Optimum times (provided IUE is still in operation) are: Sept-Nov '94 or Jan-March '95. If IUE is turned off on Sept 30th, 1994 as rumored, then we wish the observations to occur Sept 94. REAL-TIME contacts are required for the FOC observations. The brightness of Alpha Ori, and our desire to use the 128X128 IMAGE mode force real-time contacts to: 1) verify filter positions before a slew to the target can be made, and 2) to perform an interactive acquistion to center the target for the 1.8" square 128X128 IMAGE field. Observation in a second filter requires a telescope offset and a real-time telemetry verification of filters, but will not require a second interactive acquisition. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Observations of HZ4 (FOC) and ETA-UMA (GHRS) are in reality simply special calibrations to define very precisely the PSF for these two instruments. The HZ4 and ETA-UMA observations should be public domain as soon as obtained. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. As noted in Sec. 5 we wish the observations to be coordinated with an ongoing IUE and ground-based monitoring program. The ranges of optimum times are: September-November 1994 and January-March 1995. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
