Abstract It is well established that neutral atoms from the local ISM flow into the solar system forming an interstellar wind, which produces a diffuse sky background emission at 1216 A through resonant scattering of solar H Ly alpha. This wind in principle contains the velocity distribution of the local ISM, plus potentially some modification of the flow at the heliospheric interface and further modification by the solar gravity and radiation pressure near the Sun. Observations of the H Ly alpha emission line profile can reveal the temperature and velocity dispersion of the flow, allowing us to study the local ISM flow and modifications to the wind within the solar system. Recent observations of the He and H flows in the solar system suggest that the He velocity of 26 km/sec is that of the local ISM cloud, and the H velocity of 20 km/sec is due to modification of the H flow by charge exchange at the heliospheric interface. We propose here a study of the H flow by measuring the velocity distribution of the local H flow through high resolution spectra of the H Ly alpha emission line profile along 3 lines of sight in the inner solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We propose to observe along 3 lines of sight: upwind and downwind at the time of year when the Earth orbit is moving upwind, and across the flow when the Earth is moving perpendicular to the flow. The 3 lines of sight are designed to obtain information about the velocity distribution of the H flow near the Sun. The upwind/downwind observations sample regions of the flow just before and after the Sun, where the maximum effects of solar gravity and radiation pressure occur. A large velocity dispersion in the flow (as expected from a strong heliospheric charge exchange) should lead to a "filling in" of high velocity atoms in the downwind direction, observed as a broader line downwind than upwind. The cross- flow line of sight is designed to give the velocity dispersion perpendicular to the flow vector for comparison with the upwind and downwind measurements of the velocity dispersion along the flow direction. These observations require pointing only within roughly 5-10 degrees of each direction on the sky, with no bright stars in the aperture. The observations must be performed in dark time, due to geocoronal Ly alpha sky background emission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The flow of the ISW within the solar system can be studied either by directly sampling the atoms (accomplished to date only for the He flow by Ulysses spacecraft), or indirectly by remote sensing of the atoms resonant scattering solar emissions. The latter technique works only for radiative transitions arising from the ground state in which the atoms reside, so the Balmer series lines are produced only by fluorescence. By a large factor, the brightest emission of H atoms is the H Ly alpha line, and it is the only line of sufficient brightness for a line profile to be measured and the velocity structure of the flow obtained. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The only special scheduling requests are the dark time requirement and the times of year descibed above and specified below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We will use standard calibration data for the GHRS, as already applied to our cycle 1 GRHS Echelle A spectra of Mars and sky background near Mars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. There have been a total of 16 HST programs among the team in cycles 1-3. To date there have been 8 papers accepted for publication, with several more presently in preparation or review. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Complete computing facilities are in place and available within the SPRL at the University of Michigan for use on this project. Two VAX 750's and a VAX 8600 are accessible via a local area network,in addition to the Michigan network MERIT, SPAN, and Internet. Two Sun Sparcstations are in use for HST data analysis using IDL, and graduate students are normally included in this effort. All Co-I institutions also have complete data reduction facilities for use on this project, and F. Paresce at ST ScI has access to all ST ScI facilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. Address Information Name: John T.
