Abstract We propose to proceed to the next step in the program to determine Cephe distances to relatively nearby resolved galaxies that have produced type Ia supernovae (SNeIa). The feasibility of the program has been shown by our results for IC4182, where 27 Cepheids were found and used to show that V(max)=-19.76 for SNIa 1937C. Since present evidence indicates that SNeIa are good standard candles, such determinations calibrate the Hubble diagram for SNeIa at sufficiently large distances where streaming relative to the Hubble flow are negligible. From the results of SN1937C, have estimated H0=52+/-9 km/s/Mpc, where the uncertainty comes almost en from calibrating only 1 SNIa. Calibration of additional SNeIa are requi to determine the scatter in absolute magnitude to directly examine their worth as standard candles. If the indication from other evidence confirmed, H0 will be determined to within 10 percent from the same dat NGC 5253 (the host of SNeIa 1895B and 1972E) is slated for observation with HST in Cycle 3. Description of proposed observations. Observations will be carried with WFPC2. Properly time spaced exposures spanning a period of 2 months (as much permitted by the range of off- nominal roll at the same ORIENT) in the V band (F555W) will be required. In particular, we aim to obtain a sequence that has 6 images in the V band spaced by 40 hours (5/3 days), 5 images spaced at 120 hours (15/3 days) and 5 more taken at spacings of 40/3 days. These are spacings are nested in an optimum order to sample all periods from 9 to 60 days at least once for each 1/8 phase interval. Some I band (F814M) are to be taken at selected epochs to allow computation of , in order to probe questions of reddening. We expect to obtain S/N of 10 or better at V of 27.5. We estimate that after INCLUDING the object confusion effects (these galaxies are at the Virgo distance), exposures of 4200s are required. This will allow us to obtain adequate light curves of Cepheids with period 10 days or more. The roll angle of the telescope should remain the same throughout the sequence of observations on a given target. The time of year that permits the maximum period of observation at a fixed roll angle should be chosen, and the entire sequence of observations scheduled. The first observation will have to be at extreme off- nominal roll, going through nominal roll to the other extreme, as the nominal roll changes over 2 months while ORIENT is held fixed. In the exposure logsheet, dates and ORIENT angles when the scheme should be possible are indicated. The two objects are very close together in the sky, and these windows are essentially identical. Since the timing requirements and exposures are almost identical with only one exception, it may be expeditious to plan observations of these targets in tandem. Please consult the contact person during proposal implementation to if questions arise while optimizing the scheduling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The problem of the determination of distances by using Cepheids has been recognized as one of the key programs for HST. Work with ground based telescopes has proceeded as far as it can. However, seeing limitations make it impossible to carry out a program such as this from the ground because of crowding and/or limiting magnitude problems. The WFPC2 is the best of the HST instruments for this project because of its wide field and good V and I sensitivity. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Observations must be conducted at planned time intervals to ensure adequate coverage of the Cepheid light curves. Once the sequence of exposures on a target is begun, the schedule must be adhered to as well as possible. This has been very well done in Cycle 1 and 3 for similar observations. It is highly desirable (all but absolutely essential) to keep the field orientation the same over the observing period. The natural telescope roll angle for a given target changes with observation epoch. Hence the observations should be made during that time of year when the maximum time span is available for legal off-nominal roll angles, so that the field orientation is kept the same, while observing over the maximum span of dates. Such accomodation was possible in Cycle 1 and 3 for similar observations. If forced to allow changes in orientation, field coverage will be severely compromised. It may be necessary to adjust exposure times to fit the visibility periods at times of year where the SAME ORIENT constraint drives the scheduling. The similar study of Cepheids in IC 4182 and the calibration of the peak brightness of SN1937C has been completed, an is in press. The data were taken in Cycle 1. Cepheids have been found from the Cycle 3 observations of NGC 5253, and analysis is in progress. A letter to ApJ is expected by end October '93, and a full analysis paper by summer of 94. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). A. Sandage will have access to the computing facilities set up in Pasadena for the program GO-2547 on IC 4182, in addition to salary support from Carnegie and some travel expenses also from Carnegie. The ground based observations needed to calibrate the HST observations will be obtained using the telescope facilities of the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. F.D. Macchetto and N. Panagia will have access to ESA travel funds. G. Tammann and L. Labhardt will have access computing and image processing facilities at the University of Basel, and to financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation. A. Saha has access to computing facilities at STScI, and is seeking minor hardware upgrades (data storage space) from a grant from this proposal.
