Abstract We propose to test the AGN paradigm by analyzing the stellar kinematics and nuclear structure in two nearby Seyfert galaxies. The AGN paradigm proposes that AGNs are powered by the accretion of matter onto supermassive black holes. Ground-based observations have discovered evidence of supermassive black holes in nearby quiescent galaxies by analyzing the stellar kinematics and nuclear structure. However, similar observations for galaxies hosting AGNs have not been possible because Earth's atmosphere prevents the detection of stellar light within 1" of a luminous AGN. With the improved imaging performance available to Cycle 4 HST observations, 80% of the light from an AGN is contained within a circle with radius=0.1 arcsec, thus providing for the detection of stellar light close to the nucleus. The advantage of detecting supermassive black holes in Seyfert galaxies instead of quiescent galaxies is that there is no need to rely on the statistics of AGNs and galaxies to place constraints on the AGN paradigm. The mass determined for the central engine by this technique for a Seyfert galaxy could be compared directly to the mass implied by the kinematics of the BLR gas, testing the hypothesis that it is in Keplerian motion. We propose to observe two Seyfert galaxies with HST, M81 and NGC 4151, since the black hole masses suggested from other studies can be detected. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Observations needed from HST include slit spectroscopy along the major and minor axes of each galaxy (using FOS with G400H for NGC 4151 and G570H for NGC 3031) and images of each galaxy with WFPC2 and the F547M filter. Spectra of one star are needed for calibration purposes. For the FOS exposures, we plan a four stage ACQ/PEAK sequence to acquire the nucleus. Positions away from the nucleus will be acquired by offset - then return to the nucleus. Given the large field of view of the PC, a blind acquisition will be sufficient for the WFPC2 exposures. FOS exposures include (a) 0.09 arcsec square aperture centered on the nucleus and at R = 0.15 arcsec on both sides of the nucleus along the major axis; (b) 0.21 arcsec square aperture centered at R = 0.30 arcsec on both sides of the nucleus along the major axis; (c) 0.21 arcsec square aperture centered at R = 0.21 arcsec on both sides of the nucleus along the minor axis; and (d) one template star spectrum for each grating-aperture combination used for galaxy exposures for a total of four template spectra. The WFPC2 exposures will be split to discriminate against particle events. All target positions for the FOS/RD exposures on the galaxies are within 0.30 arcsec of the nucleus. All FOS exposures for a given galaxy should be obtained with a single guide star acquisitions, although guide star reacquisitions are certainly necessary. NOTE: We would wish that the apertures not overlap, but this requires using the special requirement ORIENT. We do not fully understand the impact that ORIENT would have on our program in regards to scheduling. Consequently, we have left the orientation unconstrained because some overlap of the apertures is tolerable for our scientific objectives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Extensive efforts have been invested into searching for BHs in the nuclei of galaxies using ground-based and space-based observations (see references in section 2). Uncertainties in previous work include the limited spatial resolution of ground-based observations and the assumption that gravity dominates the kinematics of the BLR. Given these limitations, many investigators in this field have anticipated high-resolution observations with HST. The discussion in section 2 demonstrates that BHs with the masses inferred by previous studies of M81 and NGC 4151 are detectable with HST. Even with aberrated optics, HST has provided clues that BHs may exist in the nuclei of several galaxies. With the servicing mission, now is the time to use HST for this project. Initial evidence for a BH in M81 was presented by Keel (1989); the stellar velocity dispersion along the minor axis rises from 130 km/s at a radius of 8" to 170 km/s at the nucleus. This velocity dispersion profile is consistent with a scaled dynamical model of M31 containing a BH with mass 2 x 10^7 solar masses. Although differences between M81 and M31 make the determined mass uncertain, the observations were obtained during conditions of 0.6" seeing. Substantial improvement in the determination of the central mass requires observations with HST. Analyzing the stellar kinematics of NGC 4151 would provide a test of the "reverberation mapping" assumption that the BLR gas is in Keplerian motion. Description of special scheduling requirements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. High S/N template spectra are required from HST because the ability to apply Fourier techniques requires that the only difference between the galaxy and template spectra be the radial velocity, velocity dispersion, and line strength. Obtaining template spectra with a different spectrograph than the galaxy spectra would introduce too much uncertainty due to slight differences between the instrumental profiles. Observations of template stars are as crucial to this project as any other instrumental calibration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We will obtain ground-based observations using the Michigan Dartmouth MIT (MDM) 2.4 m and long-slit spectrograph. Extensive efforts to improve the optics of this telescope during 1990-91 have resulted in sub-arcsec stellar images. One of us (DOR) has guaranteed access to this telescope. Complimentary ground-based spectra are needed to provide the stellar kinematics with resolution of 1" to properly constrain the dynamical models. An appropriate analysis of this type along the major axis of M81 has never been published. Ground-based observations of NGC 4151 can be obtained using a central obstruction bar to block most of the light from the nonstellar nucleus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
