Abstract The exploration of interstellar gas-phase abundances in the Galaxy, particularly along long pathlengths sampling relatively low density gas, provides vital information on the process of nucleosynthetic enrichment and the degree to which the gas is mixed in both the radial and vertical directions. Of particular interest to us here is the study of abundance variations, specifically abundance gradients, in the gas in the galactic disk and low halo. We propose to obtain GHRS high resolution (3.5 km/s) Ech-B observations of absorption line profiles of several elements arising from two distinct nucleosynthetic origins. We will use 4 sightlines in the general direction of the galactic center, each sampling relatively low density intercloud gas where the degree of depletion of heavy elements onto dust is relatively low. These sight lines, which sample both sides of the galactic center, take maximum advantage of the velocity lever-arm provided by galactic rotation. By allowing us to relate absorption as a function of LSR velocity to galactocentric radius, we will be able to produce abundance gradient data down to galactocentric radii as small as 3.5 kpc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. We propose to observed 4 stars at two three principal wavelengths, 1808, 2062, and 2374 A using grating ECH-B. All observations will be made using the LSA, to take advantage of the maximum throughput, and a sampling strategy of two substeps per diode. The slight (20%) reduction in resolution in the post-COSTAR LSA relative to the SSA will not impact our analysis. The requested observations will allow us to obtain S/N = 30 (per substep) data for Si II 1808.0, Zn II 2062.7, Cr II 2062.2, 2066.2, and Fe II l2374.5. [As an added bonus, the single- setup coverage afforded by Ech-B will allow us to also obtain data for the stronger Fe II line at 2382.8 free-of-charge. This stronger line will be useful in assessing very weak low column density absorption.] We shall also employ the FP-SPLIT=4 procedure inorder to assess and remove potentially problematic fixed pattern noise features. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
