Abstract We propose to use the FOS to build a snapshot library of UV spectra of a sample of about 50 metal-poor massive stars located in the Magellanic Clouds. The majority of libraries already existing contains spectra of hot stars with chemical abundances close to solar. The high spectral resolution achieves with the FOS will be a major factor for the uniqueness of this new library. UV spectral libraries represent fundamental tools for the study of the massive star populations of young star- forming regions. Massive stars, which are impossible to identify directly in the optical-IR part of a composite spectrum, display on the other hand key signatures in the UV region. These signatures are mainly broad, metallicity dependent spectral features formed in the hot star winds. They require a high spectral resolution (of the order of 200-300 km/s) for an adequate study. A spectral library of metal-poor massive stars represents also a unique source of data for a stellar atmosphere analysis. Within less then 10 min we will obtain a high signal-to-noise ratio of at least 30. Finally, since short exposure times are possible, this proposal makes extremely good use of the capabilities of HST. We will take spectra with the FOS using the high-dispersion gratings G130H and G190H. All observations will be done on the blue side of the FOS. The 4.3" (actually 3.7" with COSTAR) aperture will be used for all observations. The use of the 4.3" aperture allows us to do a blind target acquisition. The integrations will be done in ACCUM mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This project has specific requirements: We want to build a UV spectral library of metal-poor stars with high spectral resolution. This cannot be done from the ground. FOS on-board HST gives the high resolution (less then 2 A) required to study the spectral features in the UV. A good S/N (30 and higher) can be achieved in a short observing time (mostly less than 10 min, see 4.b) for the metal-poor stars in the LMC and SMC. With IUE, a similar project is not easily feasible, first the S/N would be smaller (15-20) and longer exposure time (i.e. many hours per stars) would be needed. This HST snapshot proposal will make extremely good use of satellite observing time. It is well known that the FOS is not well suited for observations of bright stellar sources due to the enormous instrument overhead. Our program is designed to overcome this restriction with a minimum loss of science. We believe that a snapshot survey of hot stars in the Magellanic Clouds is by far preferable than a dedicated GO study of individual LMC and SMC objects. As shown in the previous section our program has a minimum of overhead with very small compromise for the requested science. Although the main thrust behind this proposal is the creation of a library, we emphasize that as a by- product we obtain a large number of individual spectra of high S/N which are perfectly suited for a fine analysis. This is sufficient for comparison with virtually any sophisticated model atmosphere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Robert will be in charge of the reduction of the spectra, which will also require some help from an SDA (because of the large amount of data expected). A Sparc Station will be used for the reduction and the analysis of this large data base. C. Robert will also be responsible for the publication of an atlas of the spectra in a short delay after all the data are to be received. Many applications of the atlas are expected. In a first step, T. Heckman, C. Leitherer and C. Robert will synthesize the massive star population of low metallicity starburst galaxies. Therefore accurate positions with errors of the order of 0.25" were directly available. Targets not in the catalogue were easily measured on special LMC/SMC plates which are part of the GASP system.
