Abstract NGC 3603 is the densest concentration of early-type, massive stars known in the Galaxy (with the possible exception of the Galactic center cluster), and the most massive giant HII region in the Galaxy. We propose to obtain classification-quality, RV calibrated spectra of massive stars with B down to 15 mag in the central 5" (0.17 pc). This will complement ground-based spectroscopic observations of stars in the outer regions of the cluster, and will allow us to compare the stellar populations in the inner and outer regions, as well as to determine directly the mass distribution in the cluster. The nature of the peculiar luminous central stars will also be investigated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5445 PI: Laurent Drissen Proposal Title: THE STELLAR CONTENT AND DYNAMICS OF THE DENSE GALACTIC STARBURST NGC 3603: CYCLE4 HIGH ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Description of proposed observations. We will obtain spectra of a dozen stars (Fig. 1) within 5" from the core of NGC 3603. The small 0.3" aperture will be used for all stars in order to reduce contamination by the PSF wings of nearby stars and the sky background. Positions of all stars are known (from Cycle1 PC images) to within 0.05", and all of them are located within a 5" radius from the cluster center. Hence the same pair of guide stars can be used for all targets. In order to center the stars in the aperture, we will first acquire a nearby (r=20"), relatively bright (B=15.0) and isolated star. Precise offsets, which are known from PC images, will then be used to center the target stars. The G400H grating, with the red detector, is necessary for this program. All Balmer lines, from H9 to Hgamma, as well as HeI 4387, 4471; HeII 4200, 4541, and 4686 (in O stars) are present in the wavelength range (3238 A - 4784 A) covered by this grating and will be used to determine radial velocities and spectral types. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The core of NGC 3603 is extremely dense. Typical separation between the stars in the core is 0.2-0.5", a few stars being too close to eache other to obtain separate spectra even with HST. Inside a 5" radius, ground-based observations, with a typical resolution of 1", can only sample a confused agglomeration of many stars simultaneously. With HST/FOS, we will sample mainly well-isolated (for HST in the range r=0.5-5". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. GO-2441. PC images of NGC 595 and NGC 604 in M33 and NGC 3603 in the Galaxy were obtained in order to study their Wolf-Rayet population. We were able to determine the number and absolute magnitudes of W-R stars in each region and to obtain a preliminary value of the IMF slope. One paper has been published and one is in preparation. The present proposal is a direct follow-up to our observations of NGC 3603. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Drissen, Walborn and Shara have direct access to STScI computing facilities and expertise. STScI has excellent support facilities, including a library, an extensive computer network, a publications department, and will provide the secretarial support. The PI and co-Is have SUN Sparkstations with 5 Gbyte of disk space available for data reduction; IRAF and STSDas are available at STScI and Montr\'eal. Summer students are available in Montr\'eal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
