Abstract Recent results indicate that high redshift radio galaxies are young systems rich in molecular gas and dust and undergoing substantial star formation. At redshifts z > 2, these massive galaxies are the best observational examples of ongoing galaxy formation at early epochs. Only HST can probe the complex morphology of these galaxies. Recent surveys have discovered a large number of these distant galaxies and the time is ripe for a systematic study. It will be expensive, but these distant galaxies are virtually the only optically extended objects at high redshift for HST to study. We propose WFPC2 observations of a sample of 9 galaxies, with longer integrations for 3 of the best objects. For each galaxy we propose one narrow band image centered on redshifted Lyman alpha, and two color continuum images taken with the polarizer parallel and perpenducular to the radio axis. This will enable us to determine: (i) the spatial distribution of the extended emission line gas, (ii) the morphology of the underlying stellar distribution and its color gradient, (iii) the morphology of the scattered nuclear light, its color dependance, and therefore the nature of the scattering medium. The full scientific potential of the HST observations will be realized by choosing galaxies in the diagnostic window (2.2 < z < 2.6) where we can combine this data with our ground based studies of the molecular gas content, kinematics, dust extinction, and ionization state of the gas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. The plan is to obtain deep polarization images of 3 radio radio galaxies. Each galaxy is imaged in 2 colors (V and R) with the polarizer, and each color is done at two position angles: one parallel to the radio axis and one perpendicular to the radio axis. Each galaxy is also imaged in one filter centered on redshifted Lyman alpha to study the emission line gas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST high resolution images are crucial to study the color dependence of the polarization, and the gradients in these distributions. The nature and morphology of these color gradients will be a vital clue to the emission mechanism and the nature of these objects. In order to advance the study of these objects, they must be imaged in sufficient detail that sub-structure within the objects are well determined in each color and polarization. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. It is crucial that the polarizer be at the specified angles (within a 5 degree tolerance). Note that an orientation 180 degrees to all the specified positions is equivalent, so for each ORIENT command, there is an alternative one at 180 degrees to the first. Once a specific orient is scheduled, it is then crucial that all the images at that PA be at exactly the the same orient, so a NO GAP command is inserted to insure this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.
