Abstract We propose to obtain deep images of the extensive system of luminous blue arcs in the redshift 0.39 rich galaxy cluster Cl0024+16. There is strong evidence, based on available data from the ground, that these structures are the result of gravitational lensing of a faint blue background galaxy or galaxies by the cluster's deep potential well. The observational goal will be to map the variations in surface brightness and color within the arcs (which are typically about 1 arc second wide and several to ten arc seconds long). Because lensing preserves both quantities, these maps will provide strong additional constraints on detailed models of the event. The ultimate scientific goals would be to uniquely determine, or at least tightly constrain, the total (including dark) mass distribution in the cluster and to invert the lensing distortion to obtain a very high spatial resolution image of the distant background galaxies courtesy of this natural (Zwicky) telescope. For a variety of reasons, the Cl0024+16 system is among the most favorable cases for such a study among known luminous arc lens systems. If successful, such studies might profitably be extended to a few other objects in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5453 PI: Edwin L Turner Proposal Title: DEEP WF IMAGING OF THE GIANT LUMINOUS ARCS IN CL0024+16: CYCLE4 MEDIUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edwin Turner 3200 USA J. Anthony Tyson 1340 USA Charles Lawrence 1590 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Multiple exposures of the cluster will be obtained with the WFPC2 using both the F450W and the F814W filters. In order to obtain optimum correction for systematic flat field errors and thus go as faint in surface brightness as possible, we will employ three slightly different pointings (offsets of perhaps 10") through each filter. The exposures will also be split for cosmic ray removal. Experience with 10-orbit Medium Deep Survey images shows that the control of such systematic sources of error are essential for work at very faint levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. As described in the Scientific Justification, the requirement of high angular resolution is the primary reason for using HST. Extensive ground based observations have revealed substructure in the arcs but with only marginal resolution, particularly in the direction across to the arc. Also, at ground based resolutions, the structure is confused with that of nearby (in the sky) cluster galaxies in many places. The scientific goal of the project (see section 2) depend critically on obtaining the highest possible angular resolution images of the arcs and arclets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. As noted in section 2 (and see Fig. 2), Dressler and his collaborators have supplied us with a deep red image of Cl0024+16 obtained with WFPC1 for the purpose of studying the morphology of cluster members. Although it is not directly useful for our purposes, it does provide a quite useful guide for planning our observations and may give us some useful additional color data. We would plan to make our Cl0024+16 images available to Dressler et al. to use in their study of the cluster's blue galaxy population. Moreover, if these projects continue in future cycles, we expect to be able to usefully share data on other clusters. All costs of this project (including travel, computing, student participation, publication, etc.) will be supplied by the participating institutions or, at Princeton, by the PI's Long Term Space Astrophysics grant (NASA NAGW-2173). It is likely that at least one Princeton graduate student will be involved with support from this grant. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
