Abstract About 10% of all radio quiet QSOs exhibit broad absorption lines (BALs) in their spectra. The BALs come from a mostly highly ionized region outflowing from the central source at speeds up to many tens of thousands of km/s. Analysis based on resonance line scattering models suggests that BAL region covering factors are normally < 0.2. However, recent analysis of radio quiet QSO spectra with weak narrow-line [OIII] emission and strong FeII emission indicates that this special class of QSOs has a high probability of exhibiting BALs. Since narrow-line [OIII] emission is alsmost certainly emitted isotropically, this argues for large BAL region covering factors in this special class of QSOs. Note that the low covering factor models are consistent with scenarios where most QSOs have BAL regions, while high covering factor models are consistent with scenarios where there are special classes of QSOs with BAL region outflows. Using HST FOS and archived IUE or HST data when possible, we propose to explore the details of this recent finding by searching for BALs in a complete sample of 20 QSOs with weak narrow-line [OIII] emission and strong FeII emission. The nature of 6 or the 20 objects has been determined so far, and 4 of them have BALs. We request time to observe the remaining 14 objects. This work has immediate implications for understanding the evolutionary properties of QSOs and QSO geometries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. The observational status of our sample was summarized in Table 1. Thirteen FOS RED/G190H observations of single, isolated objects are needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The capabilities of HST are needed in order to obtain ultraviolet spectra. The remaining objects in our sample are too faint to observe with IUE. The exposure times have been computed for a signal-to-noise ratio of 19 per resolution element in the continuum at the predicted position of a CIV BAL. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. At Pittsburgh, institutional support includes academic salary for the PI. The University of Pittsburgh will also supply routine secretarial assistance, administrative support, and the office space required for this project. In addition, the University has a pool of graduate and undergraduate research assistants who can be called upon to perform work for this project, providing the work can be charged to the project. The Department operates a SUN SPARC2 workstation as a file server for client workstations owned by various research groups. Other Departmental facilities include a laser printer, a CD reader, limited disk space, an Exabyte 8mm tape drive, and some older model workstations. The Department pays for maintenance of this facility, but the Departmental facilities are not generally used by the various physics and astronomy research groups (except for the file server capability). Their primary purpose is as an educational tool. However, they would prove to be a good backup in the event that, for example, the computing facilities of the astronomy/astrophysics group go down. Research groups purchase and maintain their own computing facilities with project funds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
