Abstract We propose to use HST to study low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) embedded in the Orion Nebula HII region. Radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray observations have identified a category of compact high density objects containing stellar cores. These objects are believed to be recently formed low mass stars that have become exposed by the intense UV radiation field of the hot stars responsible for excitation of the HII region. We propose to target 3 disk/YSO systems, identified from recent HST observations, for detailed high-resolution imaging and low- resolution spectroscopy. Since these objects are externally illuminated by the light of nearby massive stars, they provide a unique opportunity to investigate the structure and kinematics of the circumstellar environment of a YSO at optical and UV wavelengths. Our data will be used to search for evidence of boundary layer accretion onto the YSO, to search for structure in the protoplanetary disk, and to investigate the nature of the externally induced disk ablation flow. The high spatial and spectral resolution of HST may lead to insights into the formation of proto-planetary disks, the birth of planets, and other Solar-system type objects. We will use parallel observations with WFPC2 to serendipitously search for Herbig-Haro objects and visible YSO/disks in the surrounding Orion molecular cloud. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. Our first observational goal is to obtain the highest possible angular resolution images of externally illuminated protoplanetary disks embedded in the Orion Nebula. We will re-observe 3 known disk/YSO systems using WFPC2 in its high resolution mode for imges in the red portion of the spectrum, and FOC at UV wavelengths. We plan to obtain images with unprecedented angular resolution in the emission lines of OII [2470], CII [2326] (the brightest UV lines in HII regions), in a filter which contains HI [2763,2829], Mg [2852], and MgII [2798, 2803], and in the UV continuum where few emission lines exist. The enhanced scattering efficiency in the UV will be used to search for small scale structure in the scattered light from the disk, and to probe the disk in silhouette against the background scattered light. We will also image 3 systems in OIII [5007], OI [6300], H-alpha, NII, and SII [6717, 6734], and in a broadband longwave filter (FOC) to produce the highest possible resolution images. Our second goal is to probe the UV emission line spectrum of externally illuminated disk/YSO systems. We propose to obtain low resolution (R=1200) UV to visible spectra of 3 sources using FOS. The emission line spectrum in the UV and optical bands provides key diagnostics to the physical conditions in the circumstellar / proto- planetary disk, in the disk corona, and in the ablation flow above it. The spectrum will probe the following processes: a) Accretion from the disk onto the star. b) Ablation from the disk. c) The origin of cometary morphologies in externally illuminated disks. Serendipitous imaging survey of outer portions of the Orion Nebula (Parallel Observations). While we are using FOS and FOC, we propose use WFPC2 to image that portion of the Orion Nebula that happens to fall on the detector array. The entire core of Orion is full of YSOs, many of which are potential sources of outflows and HH objects. Our parallel observations are set up so that WFPC2 looks at the region of M42 directly north of the Trapezium, where there are many young stars, HH objects, and optical outflows. The Parallel observations, combined with our WFPC2 observations will probe the region lying towards the powerfull outflow from IRc2 and the 2 micron molecular hydrogen shocks and will provide a nearly continuous mosaic of images covering the center of the Orion Nebula. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The nearest externally illuminated protoplanetary disk/YSO systems lie in the Orion Nebula where 1" corresponds to about 470 A.U.. We seek to probe the structure of these disks on the scale of the Solar System, which requires an angular resolution of about 0.05'', which is only attainable with HST. We also will probe the UV spectrum of these objects in a search for diagnostics of the disk ablation flow. UV spectral lines provide the best opportunity to probe the kinematics of this flow and and to search for rotation in the underlying protoplanetary disk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. The FOS data will be calibrated and nebular emission (taken off the protostellar condensations) will be subtracted. The resulting emission spectrum will be compared to models of photoevaporation that David Devine is developing as part of his PhD dissertation. The UV spectrum of HII regions has not yet been extensively studied. We will use the HST observations to identify spectral features which in a future HST proposal can be used for kinematic studies of protoplanetary disks with GHRS at 0.05''. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. The University of Colorado will provide time for the PI to conduct this research during the academic year.
