Abstract We aim to study the interaction between jets and the interstellar medium in the central few kpc of the Seyfert galaxy Markarian 78. In a long-slit survey of Seyfert galaxies, MKN 78 was identified as the outstanding example in which \[OIII\] 5007 profile structure clearly reveals the interaction between radio jets and the interstellar medium. Even in this optimum case, however, the important structures are within a few arcsec of the nucleus, and HST resoution is needed to trace the interaction in detail. We have already obtained a deep HST \[OIII\] image and a deep VLA 3.6 cm radio map, and these confirm the exceptional nature of MKN 78 as a laboratory for understanding the jet-ISM interaction. To complete our original HST proposal, we now ask for HST FOS spectra of several carefully chosen locations in the MKN 78 nebulosity. These will provide the crucial kinematic and physical information needed to converge on a detailed and unambiguous physical picture of the expanding radio source and its interaction with the circumnuclear gas. We note that at dec +65, MKN 78 is ideally placed within the CVZ (though we do not REQUIRE continuous viewing). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Whittle 3730 USA Andrew S. Wilson 3470 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Observing sequence : Complete all red side observations before doing blue side. ACQ/BINARY and ACQ/PEAK at offset star. Go to first target aperture. Take IMAGE (in ACQ mode). Start with G400H then G780H then wavelength calibration for a sequence of G570H exposures going around 10 aperture locations. Return to 3 apertures for other gratings. After completing red side. Sideswitch to blue. Return to offset star. Repeat above for blue exposures (five locations only). ************** ( Copy from phase I now follows) ************* Using our PC [OIII] image of MKN 78, we have defined 10 locations for FOS aperture placement. These include the bright inner [OIII] knots, the fainter outer [OIII] knots, a pure but near nuclear [OIII] plateau, and the nucleus itself in the [OIII] dark zone. We will take exposures of 4 -- 24 mins (depending on the aperture) using grating G570H to track the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ kinematics in the various components. These spectra will also give H$\beta$ and [OI]$\lambda6300$ from which some excitation information can be derived. At five aperture locations (both bright [OIII] knots, two fainter knots, and the plateau) we will also take spectra using G190H, G400H, G780H to obtain UV and optical diagnostic lines (exposure times vary depending on aperture and grating). From these we can estimate a wide range of physical parameters for the ionized gas which, when combined with our radio data, will give considerable insights into the nature of the radio --- emission line interaction (see scientific justification). In all, we ask for 25 different spectra with total exposure time 8.5 hr (12.4 hr spacecraft time). We will use an offset star measured using our PC image for `early aquisition'. We also note that at a Declination of +65, MKN 78 is ideally placed in the center of the CVZ. We do NOT, however, request CVZ time on SCIENTIFIC grounds. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Typical sizes of linear double or triple radio structures in Seyfert galaxies are about 0.1 - 3 arcsec. To understand the interaction of the radio ejecta with the emission line gas, we {\underbar {must}} spatially resolve these scales. ********* We have pursued long-slit and line-imaging of Seyfert galaxies to the limit of ground based resolution. The study by Whittle {\it et al.} (1988 ApJ 326 125) used a 0.63 arcsec square pixels in $\sim$1.5 arcsec seeing and 45 km s$^{-1}$ resolution. More recently, Whittle and Wilson obtained CFHT spectra of MKN 78 in about 1 arcsec seeing and 0.4 arcsec pixels, including [OIII]$\lambda5007$, H$\alpha$, [OI]$\lambda6300$, and [SII]$\lambda\lambda6717,6731$. Even with this good seeing, the velocity components from individual knots are blended and obtaining a clear set of line ratios is quite difficult. The jump to 0.1 arcsec resolution and the ability to isolate individual knots would be a critical improvement. Similarly, we have pushed narrow band imaging of Seyferts to the limit of ground based conditions -- - using the University of Hawaii 88 inch telescope on Mauna Kea (Haniff, Wilson and Ward 1988 ApJ {\bf 344} 104, 10 objects), also with the Image Stabilization Instrument System (ISIS) to further reduce the effective seeing (Whittle {\it et al.} 1986 MN {\bf 222} 189). Once again, the restrictions imposed by seeing are critical, and prevent a detailed pursuit of the emission line -- radio link. We have also pursued high resolution radio imaging of MKN78 using the VLA. We chose 3.6 cm giving 0.15 - 0.28 arcsec resolution (uniform $-$ natural weights). If awarded HST time we would attempt a 1.3 cm map of MKN 78 with 0.07 arcsec resolution with the aim of deriving a spectral index distribution. *********************** In summary, until the limits imposed by ground based seeing are overcome, it is unlikely that substantial further progress will be made in the study of the interaction of radio ejecta with line emitting material in the nuclear regions of Seyfert galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Our target, MKN 78, lies within the CVZ region. NOTE that we do NOT need continuous viewing on scientific grounds, and our program has NOT been designated a CVZ program. Nevertheless, some savings in spacecraft time would be realised if our program were executed in continuous viewing mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. None (think about this for wavelength cals) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We intend to use our existing HST PC image to provide `Early Aquisition' information. There is a $\sim14$ mag star in the PC field for which we have accurate offsets (about 40 arcsec) to our first FOS aperture. We then use accurate offsets to go to our other aperture locations. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. Cycle 1, GO 2493, ``Narrow Band Imaging of Markarian 78'', M Whittle and A Wilson. Data obtained Sept 1992. *************** Cycle 2 GO 3724 : ``Ionizing Cones, Obscuring Tori and the Narrow Line Regions of Seyfert Galaxies'', A.S.Wilson (PI), R.E.Griffiths, T.M. Heckman, J.H. Krolik and George K. Miley. Data obtained Sept 1992. *************** HST program GO 2493 is a precursor to the current program. We originally applied to do imaging and spectroscopy but dropped the spectroscopy because of the HST aberration. The present proposal is to complete the spectroscopy. Despite being cycle 1, we only got the data in Sept 1992. The data are now fully reduced, as is our VLA data, and we have begun writing the paper. Many of the results are discussed in the scientific justification to the present proposal. Some of these results were presented at the recent Kentucky meeting on `Mass Transfer Induced Activity in Galaxies', to be published by CUP. *************** HST program GO 3724 is not directly related to the current proposal. Data on the four target galaxies have been fully reduced, with extended emission structures found in three. Two papers are in draft form and the results for three galaxies are being presented at the Berkeley AAS (June 93). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
