Abstract Elemental abundances and the enrichment of interstellar gas are a strong function of the processes associated with the broad spectrum of stellar evolution. Stellar evolution theory predicts that specific elements can have dramatically different nucleosynthetic histories and so studying the gas phase abundances of such elements in both the Milky Way and other galaxies provides important information on both stellar and subsequently galactic evolution. We propose a study to produce high quality abundance data for the undepleted heavy element Kr (Z = 36) toward six stars representing three distinctly different galactic directions. Our main focus here is the abundance of Kr I primarily because it is a noble gas and is therefore not expected to be depleted onto dust. Thus, unlike all other heavier-than-Zn elements, measures of Kr constitute a direct probe of the cosmic abundance. Variability in the abundance of Kr therefore yields a direct probe of nucleosynthetic enrichment and the efficiency with which this material is mixed in the interstellar gas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. We propose to observed 6 stars at the principal wavelength 1246 using grating G160M. All observations will be made using the SSA and a sampling strategy of four substeps per diode. The requested observations will allow us to obtain high quality data for Ge II 1237.1 and Kr I 1235.8. In addition, the wavelength coverage afforded by G160M will also give us good data for the weak doublet of Mg II 1239.9,1240.4 and other diagnostic lines down to 1264. Since the lines we desire to observe will be relatively weak, we require high signal-to-noise data which can be easily obtained using G160M and the SSA. In order to achieve this, each requested observation will employ the command FP-SPLIT=4. Also, since our program stars are bright, we must split out observations into a suitable number of subexposures so as to not overflow the maximum count of 65,536 per accumulation bin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
