Abstract This project is a search for 'superplanets' around selected pre-main sequence stars in I band using Planetary Camera II. The superplanets will be detected in their intrinsic thermal radiation. The detectability factors are stellar age and spectral type, and mass and semi-major orbital axis of the superplanet. Because of the superb peak-to-wing ratio of its point spread function after spherical aberration is corrected, HST is uniquely capable of performing this survey and determining the statistical occurrence of superplanets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. On each target star, we will obtain PC frames at each of two spacecraft rotations, and each frame will have 9 exposures (dwell points) with the star positioned at grid points in a pattern. All exposures of one star must be obtained within one day. We understand this will involve multiple scheduling units to implement. Because the two spacecraft rotations must be separated by a fairly large angle--minimum of 18 deg--the first orientation should probably be at an off-nominal roll angle to assure the feasibility of the second rotation, which will be off-nominal in the other direction, but by a lesser amount than if the first rotation were nominal. The absolute position angle on the sky is irrelevant. We need to obtain 9 exposures for each PC1 frame in a 3x3 pattern. The spacing between the repeated images should be 8", and the shutter should be closed between exposures. Each target should be acquired at 2 roll angles differing by 20 degrees +/- 1 degree. The rotated exposures should be obtained within one day of the first exposures and the rotation can be either a + or a - rotation of 20 degrees. The exposure times (dwell times) were computed to detect a superplanet with flux 2.5 PH/S at 9000A at a distance of 0.3" from the target star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The search of superplanets will be performed in the Taurus-Auriga star forming complex. The superplanets will be detected in their intrinsic thermal radiation. The detectability factors are the age and spectral type of the star, and the mass and semi-major orbital axis of the superplanet. Because of the superb peak-to- wing ratio of its PSF after spherical aberration is corrected, HST is uniquely capable of performing this survey and determining the statistical occurrence of superplanets around pre main sequence stars down to a distance of about 0.3". We are acutely aware that this search is at the cutting edge of what is technically feasible with HST and may be subject to systematic errors. Neverthless, based on our long experience with HST optical issue, with the problem of direct planet detection, and with similar data sets at infrared wavelengths, we have confidence in this project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We want to obtain 2 frames within 1 day with an ORIENT offset of 20 degrees between the two. The first observations should be sought in off-nominal rolls to increase the availability of guide stars pairs for both orientations. We do want the same guide star pair if possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. The previous HST work is unrelated to this proposal. The program was GO 4353 - Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Io, M.McGrath, P.Sartoretti, F.Paresce, J.T.Clarke, J.R.Spencer, A.S. McEwen.
