Abstract Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects: in their own right they represent one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena; they may be used as probes of their environments; and they are unique probes of the early Universe. The size scales and brightness levels which HST can measure are ideally suited to studying the optical emission associated with the host galaxies of radio sources and anomalies such as jets and tidal debris. We propose a PC continuum snapshot survey of the 3CR catalog to address the following issues: What are the host galaxy morphologies - are there differences between FR-I and FR-II sources, nuclear cusps, tidal tails\? How common are optical jets\? Do optical continuum and radio structures align and is there detailed morphological correspondence\? How common are dust-lanes and nuclear dust-discs, what is their orientation and morphology\? Since the 3CR is so well-studied, we have an excellent pre-existing database for correlation studies between the optical properties and observations at other wavelengths, from the radio to the X-ray, including ground-based optical data, and so it should be possible to clearly disentangle the effects of power from evolution and environment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. Our goal is to obtain broad-band observations of the 3CR sources using PC1. We aim for 5 minutes per observation, although we are somewhat flexible in this. For bright objects, brighter than 18.5, we split the exposure. Any exposures in excess of 5 min should also be split. We will be happy at the end of the Cycle if the distribution of exposure times is wide, but has a peak close to 5 min. That is, some observations can be shorter and others longer than 5 min, provided some effort is made to favour 5 min as the default. All observations will use the most efficient filter F702W. Single guide star tracking would be acceptable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The high spatial resolution and sensitivity of HST will enable us to determine the properties of host radio galaxies over a broad range in redshift. We will be able for the first time to detect optical jets by utilizing the resolution and enhanced contrast over the host galaxies, determine the detailed structure of the host galaxies themselves at all redshifts and explore the environment of those galaxies and in unprecedented detail. None of this is possible with ground-based observations, and the correction of spherical aberration means that even short survey exposures such as the ones we propose will reach faint limits and be free of problems even close to active nuclei. Prior to the refurbishment mission, survey work was impractical; with the refurbishment it is once again a major capability of the HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The are no special scheduling constraints. We can proceed immediately with these observations, as they are exceptionally straightforward. We are happy to be flexible in the exposure times, as long as some effort is made to prefer our 5 min default. Longer or shorter are acceptable. Longer ones should be CR-SPLIT. Single guide star tracking is acceptable. Each exposure logsheet line is intended to be a separate SU. In order to obtain correct resource estimates we have therefore given slightly modified names to the same targets for some objects, which also increases the apparent number of targets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. There are no special calibration requirements. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We have applied for funding for a postdoctoral researcher who will take the lead in analysis and reduction efforts, and who will coordinate scientific collaboration between the parties involved. The majority of applicants, including the PI, are based at STScI and we anticipate that this will be the center of activity for this work. The applicants are experienced in the handling of HST and VLA data which will be required for this project, including direct knowledge of the calibration program of the wfpc2 through Sparks and Biretta. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Given the simplicity of our observations and potential improvements in scheduling efficiency later in Cycle 4, we urge that this project begin as soon as possible. We have no calibration or scientific pre-requisites and hence from our point of view, the observations could begin as soon as the wfpc2 coarse alignment has successfully completed and the TECs are on during SMOV. We are happy to be flexible in the exposure times, as long as some effort is made to prefer our 5 min default. Longer or shorter are acceptable. Longer ones should be CR-SPLIT. However, our science goals are such that a quick-look snapshot observation will suffice: is there an optical jet, are the nuclear regions disturbed, etc. We are not in competition with detailed studies of objects. Numerous publications. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The STScI supplies network connections and common workstation-based computing environment (printers, hard-copier, fileserver with shared diskspace). The proposers have or will have workstations obtained from previous grants which may require upgrade and continuing maintenance.No dedicated research assistants or students are available, and such staff must be proposed for and funded.
