Abstract Stellar masses which lie at or just below the stellar/ sub-stellar boundary are difficult to determine with certainty. Only binary stars with low luminosity members provide masses. In the best studied cases a significant source of uncertainty in the estimated masses is the blending of the light on the photographic plates used to record the stars' positions. The blending must be modelled in order to determine the locus of the center of mass. The position of the center of mass determines the mass ratio. Without knowing this, or the fraction of the total mass of the pair present in each component of the system, the uncertainty resulting from blending provides a point of attack for those who question the reality of ~ 0.05 solar mass estimates and thus not clearly sub- stellar or "brown dwarfs". We plan to resolve the pairs, measure orbital motion for mass ratio and determine individual masses with the help of orbital parameters which are well determined from ground-based work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5510 PI: Dr. Laurence G. Taff Proposal Title: MASS RATIO DETERMINATION FOR DOUBLES WITH SUBSTELLAR MASS MEMBERS CYCLE 4 - MEDIUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Laurence G. Taff STSCI USA Dr. John L. Hershey COMPUTER SCIENCE CORP AT STSCI USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Observe the target double star in POS and TRANS mode. Observe a field of reference stars in POS mode, return to the double and observe in TRANS and POS mode; all in Fine Lock guidance. POSitional Mode FGS Observations to establish a reference reference frame for each scientific target plus the TRANSfer Mode observations of the scientific targets for positions of binary components. Primary objective is measuring long-term orbital motion in a reference frame for individual mass determination. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Speckle interferometry cannot provide the mass ratio and individual masses of these close pairs because it cannot provide the star positions in a reference frame of background stars. While speckle interferometry, and other forms of ground-based interferometry used on bright stars can resolve most of these systems, only position angle and distance are furnished. The absolute motion of the center of mass is not fixed because no other (i.e., reference) stars are observed when performing speckle work. Thus, the HST is not needed to observe these systems to compute the RELATIVE orbit; rather the HST is critical for computing the ABSOLUTE orbit. The HST Fine Guidance Sensors are uniquely capable of resolving these close, faint stars AND measuring background stars to provide a reference frame in which to determine the locus of the center of mass of the pairs. The HIPPARCOS mission is too short and unlikely to detect them as doubles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. No real time observations requested. Scheduling requests are intended give a good range of parallax factors, but with broad time ranges in the requested intervals for ease of scheduling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
