Abstract We propose to continue a comprehensive study of cores of early-type galaxies. In Cycles 4 and 5, our aims are 1) FOS spectroscopy to look for supermassive black holes (BHs) and 2) imaging to follow up on new puzzles revealed by our Cycle 1 and 2 observations. Our BH search was approved in Cycle 1 but was postponed because of spherical aberration. FOS spectra will be used to determine velocity-dispersions and rotation profiles along the major axes of four prime BH candidates. Dynamical models will be constructed using an improved maximum-entropy algorithm. If BHs are present as suggested by ground based work, we should find velocities of ~400 km/s and M/L >> 100 at r < 15 pc. PC images in V and I are proposed for all spectroscopy targets and for 6 other early-type galaxies covering a wide variety of core types, as found in Cycles 1 and 2. Using the extra-sharp and stable resolution of the refurbished HST, we will measure nuclear color gradients and search for nuclear clusters, multiple nuclei, and nuclear cusps around possible BHs. These phenomena provide key tests of popular hypotheses for the formation of cores. Our Cycle 1 and 2 imaging survey has revealed several surprises. Almost no galaxies were found with constant-brightness cores. A possible correlation with isophote shape suggests there may be two distinct kinds of ellipticals. And several bulges were discovered with surprisingly indistinct nuclei. The imaging part of our program is aimed to clarify these and other issues. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. We propose FOS spectroscopy for 4 BH candidate galaxies, plus one control galaxy not suspected to contain a massive BH. We are using the 0.25" aperture of the FOS (0.21" actual), grating G570H and the red digicon. The purpose is to measure rotation velocities and velocity dispersions along galaxy major axes to look for massive BHs. Each BH candidate will be mapped with a central velocity dispersion, plus 2-3 flanking spectra at radii of 0.15-0.30" for rotation and dispersion. A central dispersion only is measured for the control galaxy. The planned S/N per A varies from 50 for the best BH candidate to 25??, based on existing surface-brightness profiles measured from HST images. V- and I-band images of each spectroscopic candidate galaxy are included, using the Planetary Camera and filters F555W and F814W. Further V- and I-band imaging is proposed for 6 additional early-type galaxies. Exposure times are calculated to result in 20- 40,000 electrons in the peak pixel. Added exposures fill out the minimum exposure time per filter to 1000 s. Accurate positioning of the FOS aperture is accomplished via a 5-level ACQ/PEAK procedure. Counts and uncertainties at each level have been estimated from existing deconvolved PC images, available for every FOS candidate galaxy. We also include FOS calibration spectra of a normal K giant star. The star is stepped around in the FOS aperture in five positions to map the line profile versus position (see Question 5 below). Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Study of galaxy cores from the ground is stalled at a radius of about 0.5". This resolution is not adequate. At about 0.5", only the nearest few dozen giant ellipticals are resolved, and brightness profiles inside their cores are hardly known. Small elliptical cores cannot be studied at all. The several new examples found by HST of multiple nuclei, disks, dust rings, central cusps, and nucleations were mostly unsuspected from the ground. The BH search is similarly resolution limited. Mass-to-light ratios of ~100 are detected from the ground, marginally interesting but not high enough to rule out stellar populations, and undetected nuclear bars may also offer an escape. HST increases spatial resolution by at least a factor of 2, shrinking the innermost accessible radius down to 0.1". If BHs are present, rotation velocities will then rise to 400 kms, and M/Ls will exceed several 100. At that level, alternatives to BHs will become exceedingly implausible. The FOS spectroscopy sample includes the four best BH candidate galaxies not locked up by GTOs. Each of these is observed in multiple locations, a central spectrum and 2-3 flanking spectra. High rotation in the flanking spectra are particularly diagnostic of a central dark mass. A normal galaxy, NGC 3379, not suspected dynamically to contain a BH, is added as a control. This is one of the few resolved core galaxies with high enough surface brightness for a spectrum to be obtained. Spectrosopic exposure times are designed to achieve a S/N of 50 per A for the best BH candidate, NGC 3115, 37 for the next-best BH candidate, NGC 4594, and 25-18 for all remaining objects. Extensive simulations of FOS spectra indicate that a S/N of 25-18 is needed to measure sigma to an accuracy of 8% and rotation velocity to 0.08 x sigma. This level is adequate but not excessive to establish core kinematic properties with high certainty. We have increased S/N over this minimum level for the two best candidates in order to measure departures from Gaussian line profiles. Imaging exposure times are chosen to achieve a central exposure of 20-40,000 electrons per peak pixel. We take two exposures at this nominal level, plus one at 1/3 nominal to allow for unresolved nuclei. Exposure times in most cases are based on already reduced HST profiles. We have also added extra exposures when needed to boost the minimum time per filter to 1000 s. These come at little added cost given the spacecraft overhead time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We have eliminated the need for WFPC early-acquisition pictures by using ACQ/PEAK directly on the galaxies (see question 8 for more on this). A stellar template spectrum for measuring velocity dispersions is required. We are using a normal K giant star from the Lick IDS stellar library. The magnitude of this star (V=11.14) is too bright for ACQ/BIN so we are using ACQ/PEAK. From Table 1.1.3 in the FOS Handbook, we see that the spectral resolution for a point source is degraded by 70 kms through the 0.21" FOS aperture. This causes a significant error for sigma's below 200 kms. We will calibrate this effect by stepping the standard star around in the aperture in five positions. These multiple exposures will also provide a test of FOS repeatability. The team of Ford and Jaffe are proposing an additional standard star, which we plan to share. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Velocity dispersion measurements require exceptionally good wavelength stability of the FOS during an exposure. Our exposures last up to 4 hours. Our conferences with FOS staff indicate that geomagnetic correction updates are frequent and accurate enough for our purposes (10 kms, or 0.17 A). However, we are taking a wavelength calibration with every spectrum just to be sure. The special wavelength calibrations apply to all FOS spectra, including the standard star exposures. Total spectrosopic sequences on N3115 and N4594 are probably too long to fit within one SAA visibility period. We have scheduled them with SEQ NO GAP, but they will have to be broken into pieces. Each piece must start with the same ACQ/PEAK and verification-picture sequence. See COMMENT lines under N3115 and N4594 for more details. The pieces can be broken up in any way as long as each spectrum has its own wavelength calibration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. The trickiest aspect of this proposal is centering the FOS aperture on the galactic nuclei. We need an accuracy of 0.04". Most of our galaxies have offset stars farther than 60", for which HST slew errors are 0.1". Since an ACQ/PEAK on the nucleus would be necessary anyway, we proceed directly to ACQ/PEAK. We have studied the accuracy of centerings from previous two cycles of data in PC6. Galaxies with GASP coordinates have an RMS uncertainty (in each coord) of 1.52". The ACQ/PEAK search starts with a box that contains such an object with 99% certainty. The peak-up procedure continues through five levels. Using deconvolved HST pictures, we have integrated to find out the counts through each aperture size. We have also studied the effect of shot noise, taking into account the contrast of the brightest pixel and also of the fact that it competes with four neighbors (kitty-corner pixels are so faint as to be unimportant). A difficulty occurs when the nucleus lies nearly directly on the boundary between search pixels. Due to shot noise, or jitter, one may choose the wrong pixel. If this occurs early, the search may leave the nucleus permanently behind. It is important to calculate this and protect against photon and jitter statistics early in the search. The proposed search strategy is the result of these data. It is designed to yield an accuracy of <=0.039" for sharp-core BH candidate galaxies and an accuracy of <=0.06" for the diffuse-core control galaxy NCG 3379. Prior proposal: GO 2600/3912 --"Cores of Early-Type Galaxies". This was an imaging survey of early-type cores, results in the Scientific Justification. Dressler: GO 2373/3857/4719 -- "Morphology of Galaxies in Clusters at z=0.5. Kormendy: GO 3913 -- "UV Imaging of IRAS Starburst Galaxies", no data yet. Lauer/Faber/Grillmair: various WFPC GTO programs, notably GTO 1105: "Peculiar Galaxies", GTO 1106: "Baade's Window", and GTO 1118: "Nuclei of Nearby Normal Galaxies" The galaxy samples in GTO 1105, GTO 1118, GO 2600, and this proposal are complementary. Together they comprise a sample of normal and peculiar early- type galaxies of a wide range of properties. Imaging of BH candidates was carried out under 1118. 2600 is now complete. Future work on 1105 and 1118 will decline, and this proposal will take their place. Nearly all HST images on these proposals have been reduced, and several papers are in preparation. All analysis work will be performed at our home institutions. The necessary computer equipment is basically in place, although we may require small augmentations such as new disks. Our institutions provide excellent computer and software maintenance services. We have access to good observational facilities at Mauna Kea, Las Campanas, CTIO, KPNO, and Lick. These have been used to gather data to prepare the observing lists and will continue to be used to observe the outer parts of galaxies. Access to good seeing at Mauna Kea has been especially key to compiling our lists of candidate galaxies. A new resource on this proposal is the addition of Drs. Carl Grillmair and Yong Byun. Their services come at little cost. Grillmair is supported by the Wide-Field Camera Team, and Byun is a Hubble Fellow at UH. Both are familiar with galaxy imaging and spectroscopy. The only major charge for them is their travel to team meetings. Students may be hired at UH and UCSC, but the vast majority of work will be done by the Co-I's themselves. We are also requesting the addition of a postdoc to assist Richstone in dynamical modelling. This item was cut out of our budget when spherical aberration prevented FOS spectroscopy. Now we ask that it be restored.
