Abstract The Magellanic Clouds, because of their well-determined distance and small extinction, allow an unprecedented opportunity to observe many ISM phenomena occurring in a whole galaxy. The HST resolution (0.1" = 0.025 pc) offers detail hitherto poorly studied in the extragalactic context on the morphology and spatial relationships in various ISM processes associated with the evolution of Population I and Population II systems. This long term (13 yr) parallel program exploits these opportunities by obtaining WF/PC images of appropriate targets that are accessible at the same time as primary pointings. The number of parallel observations per Cycle is estimated at ~20; and our intent is to accumulate a significant archive of Magellanic Cloud direct images over the life of the program. The parallel targets, to be specified in Phase II of each HST Cycle, will include (or search for) compact H II regions, proto-stellar and maser regions, reflection nebulae, Herbig-Haro objects, stellar ejecta, SNR and wind-driven shells, supershells, planetary nebulae, Very Low Excitation nebulae and candidates for proto-planetary nebulae. Description of proposed observations. Pure parallel images of a variety of diffuse nebular objects in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds are to be obtained with WF/PC. The primary pointings of HST in the Magellanic Clouds will provide the basis for this project. If an object of interest occurs within the WFC field at any roll angle, an emission line image in a narrow band and continuum image in a broad band filter will be requested. The targets of interest cover a broad range - to ensure a strong probability of obtaining images - from proto-stellar regions, through HII regions, supernova remnants, shells and supershells to evolved objects around high mass stars to planetary nebulae. Depending on the object and the exposure time of the primary pointing, a variety of emission line and continuum images will be taken. The program relies heavily on the primary pointings which clearly will differ from cycle to cycle. However we do not expect our methods or proposed targets to change substantially from year to year. On the basis of our Phase 2 Cycle 2 planning, there were about 40 hours of FOS and FOC pointings in the Magellanic Clouds, from which we selected the most promising fields (eliminating short primary exposures), giving 34.1 hours of parallel imaging. In this Cycle (4) we find 13 hours of high priority imaging. Similar estimates hold for further cycles dependant on the pattern of primary observations. Over the envisaged lifetime of this program, a potentially valuable archive of ~400 images of Magellanic Cloud nebulae will accrue. From the Cycle 2 and 3 Phase 2 exercises and what we have learnt in the scheduling process of Cycle 2+3, we have developed the following strategy: 1. An image in an emission line filter and a nearby continuum filter are requested in groups. The continuum filter is for PSF determination over the field at the same epoch (to guard against time variations of PSF) and for distinguishing emission line objects. (Ideally we want to specify GROUP NOGAP to ensure that line and continuum images are taken close in time. However we are advised that since GROUP NOGAP implies two images per orbit, this requirement may prejudice the chance of scheduling parallel exposures when the primary instrument is FOS. We request that: THE EMISSION LINE AND CONTINUUM FILTER IMAGE EXPOSURES BE KEPT AS CLOSE TOGETHER IN TIME AS POSSIBLE, constistent with other constraints.) 2. The grouped emission line and continuum filter images are repeated within the available primary exposure time. We have budgeted 4min for all images, to give a realistic idea of the total exposure time we can request relative to the primary exposure time. 3. The emission line filter images have been made as long as possible so that as few readouts as possible occur to preserve S/N. The star images will saturate and may bloom in some cases. We have not worried about this with the WFPC2. 4. Since a parallel program cannot specify roll angle ( this being set by the primary pointing or the scheduling system ) we have attempted to specify targets where interesting nebulae will occur at all roll angles, so that there is maximum probability of obtaining images. Where there is not interesting structure at all roll angles, or we wish to image a small nebula, we have specified a range in angles (as position angle in the target list and roll angle in the exposure logsheet ). Where a limited roll angle extent is specified WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN IMAGING OUTSIDE THIS RANGE. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The scientific motivation for this project is high spatial resolution imaging. The scientific returns increase in proportion to the increased resolution since greater structural detail is resolvable. For example the closer nebular emission is resolved to a star the lower its derived kinematic age for stellar ejecta. From the ground the best resolution that can routinely be assumed is 0.5 arcsec. For the smallest objects, high resolution reduces limits on the size to ~5 times lower than ground-based data whilst for the large extended objects a ~25 times increase in areal resolution is achievable. To the extent that this program only comes into its own with the spatial resolution provided by HST imaging, it has not been pursued from the ground. However many of the proposers have a strong involvement in Schmidt photographic surveys and CCD imaging of Magellanic Cloud phenomena as well as spectroscopy of nebulae. The deep, large scale imaging of the Magellanic Clouds forms an integral forerunner to the program outlined and much of the basis for the parallel pointings. The exposure times are dictated by the primary pointings so we restrict the exposure justification to showing that in typical cases useful signal-to-noise can be achieved. We have constructed a target list based on the fluxes of known objects or on useful limits to magnitudes and fluxes consistent with the scientific aims pursued. We have used the exposure time calculation given in the WFPC2 Manual, with encircled energy over 4 pixels for point sources and per pixel for extended sources, although in reality there may be unresolved emission line features. For all the faint targets to be studied, read-out noise dominates background light (except for knots or stars embedded in bright emission). We have only considered use of Wide Field Camera but in the cases when a small object is favourably located for the Planetary Camera or the general field containing a brighter extended object, we would also consider use of the Planetary Camera. Since the area covered by the PC is lower than for WFC, this gives a lower probability of obtaining parallel images of the targets of interest; however the smaller pixels would benefit study of compact sources (such as VLE nebulae and planetary nebulae). For stellar sources the background noise from sky and read-out has been summed in a 0.2 arcsec square aperture, whilst for extended sources the noise in a 0.1x0.1 or 0.2x0.2 arcsec area was usually considered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Once the next Cycle GO and GTO FOS and FOC pointings in the Magellanic Clouds are available in machine-readable form, the potential parallel opportunities will be investigated to identify pointings that include the targets of interest. The annulus accessible to WFPC2 centred on the primary aperture will be matched against catalogues and photographic plates. Catalogues of IR sources, masers, dark clouds, molecular clouds, carbon stars, early type stars with emission lines, WR nebulae, OB associations, SNR's, shells and supershells and planetary nebulae will be compared. For photographic material overlays will be generated and possible nebular objects of interest identified. Allowing for any roll constraints the list of parallel pointings in terms of primary pointing and roll angle will be formed. The known magnitudes and surface brightnesses (estimated from plate material) will be used to determine exposure times (also taking account of any bright stars in the fields). A selection will be required if there are many parallel opportunities. From our experience in Cycle 2 Phase 2 we are confident of our ability to select the highest priority parallel opportunities. Based on the experience in Cycle 2 and 3 ~20 WF/PC images are expected per year. Given that several of the proposers will handle the image restoration this requires only modest computer usage at any one site. Four of the proposers have access to in-house SUN/SPARC workstations and the others to VAXes. Two of the proposers have direct experience in Richardson-Lucy and Maximum Entropy restorations with software ready to run. We expect to be be able to handle the data volume, which should amount to about one set of images in several filters per investigator per six months. The European investigators can call on student help and limited reseach assistance, although do not anticipate great call on this resource. The European applicants have access to travel funds for travel within Europe and limited travel to the USA.
