Abstract We propose to take brief exposures with the FOS Prism at the end of each primary FOS observation of a quasar, AGN, or BL Lac. These exposures would be made during the unused target visibility period at the end of an observation, and would make use of the targets already acquired for the primary observation. The scientific results of this program would be a large (~50 objects), uniformly observed database for the study of the optical to ultraviolet continuum shapes of quasars. The ability to get the optical and ultraviolet energy distributions together in a single exposure avoids uncertainties caused by target variability and instrumental cross- calibration. The FOS Prism is the only instrument which can obtain such information, and its limited spectral resolution is sufficient to compare the results with models for the continuum spectrum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. The FOS Prism covers the range 1650\AA~to 9000\AA, with accurate low resolution spectrophotometry from 2000 to 5000\AA~(the calibration is relatively uncertain further to the red and the efficiency is low shortward of 2000 \AA). The strength of this idea is the high efficiency of the FOS Prism, which can obtain a S/N=20 `spectrum' of an 18th magnitude quasar in only 3 minutes. The Prism exposure would often be complementary to the primary science exposures. The Prism data would provide a simultaneous tie to the optical B band continuum level. In addition, it could be used to accurately determine the continuum shape. We have extracted a list of the FOS quasar and AGN targets from cycle 4 and submit exposure requests to the STScI with minimum acceptable exposure times for each target. The target will have been acquired by the primary program; normally the only instrumental setup required is the replacement of the grating with the Prism which takes up to 1.5 minutes. We will normally use the aperture selected by the primary GO for that target,unless an occulting aperture, or the low throughput 0.25-PAIR or 0.1-PAIR apertures are in place. In this case we will also request the 1.0 circular aperture; the extra overhead is justified by the extra throughput. While it would be preferable always to use the red digicon, the setup time for a change is prohibitive so we will use whichever digicon was used by the GO. The blue digicon exposures will take twice as long and will only be useful out to 5000\AA, but this is perfectly acceptable for our program. Optimum exposure times will be based on target visual magnitude and will be between one and six minutes. The scheduling system will then insert the exposure if and only if a sufficiently large gap in the schedule exists at the end of the primary exposures for that target. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST is the only instrument giving the simultaneous optical-ultraviolet coverage required by this proposal. While extensive work has been done on comparing ground -based optical and IUE ultraviolet observations of the quasar continuum, such efforts have been limited by the uncertainty involved in matching up the two sets of observations. Further, this proposal takes full advantage of the fact that HST is already pointing at the targets of interest. We have chosen exposure times to give a minimum signal-to-noise of 20 per diode at 2500A, so we will have 5 percent accuracy at the point where the Prism spectrum is tied to the grating spectra. This will give even higher S/N in the optical (3000-5000A) region where the Prism is most efficient. We will use a minimum exposure time of two minutes so that we are not dominated by overheads. For bright targets the resulting very high S/N data will be extremely useful for understanding instrumental effects. For the faintest targets in the blue digicon we restrict the proposed exposure time to six minutes on the grounds that a successful exposure with a S/N of 13 is better than an exposure with a S/N of 20 that fails to be scheduled. If it turns out that available visibility periods are longer than six minutes we would like to extend the exposure times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. This proposal requires special scheduling implementation. The Cycle 4 target list was used to determine the list of target snap exposures which the SPSS system will then match up with the primary QSO exposures when scheduling gaps are available. We require no special calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data will be reduced using the STSDAS system at STScI and SAO. A. Kinney and A. Koratkar are FOS Instrument Scientists at STScI and will take lead responsibility for calibration issues. I. Evans is an expert in FOS engineering data and scheduling and will be responsible for scheduling strategies. J. McDowell is developing the quasar energy distribution database at SAO and will take lead responsibility for providing final data products and making them available to the community on a timely basis. The calibrated spectra will be converted to the FITS BINTABLE format being developed by J. McDowell for energy distribution data, and will also be resampled to a linear wavelength scale and converted to a standard IRAF-style FITS 1-dimensional image array. Both types of data product will be made available by the anonymous ftp protocol. Further scientific analysis including comparison with theoretical models as described in the Scientific Justification will be carried out jointly by the team. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. In order to protect the interests of the GOs for the primary exposures, and make the data available to the community as widely as possible, we waive all proprietary rights to the Prism snapshot data. McDowell's Cycle 2 archival proposal is scientifically related to the present proposal, and involves extracting Cycle 1 and 2 FOS observations of quasars from the archive and analysing them in a uniform way. Work on that proposal is still at an early stage since the archive has only been open for a few months. However, preliminary studies of the quality of the currently available data (both high resolution and Prism) and the realization that very few Prism exposures were being taken motivated the present proposal. None of the remaining programs are related to this proposal. Data for programs 3837, 4364, 4586, and 4967 have only recently been obtained, and are being analyzed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
