DIRECTOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract We wish to use the FGS to study the morphology of bright AGN's known to have radio structure on the scale of several milliarcseconds. Because their structures are linear, these objects are ideal for investigating the feasibility of using the HST FGS to attain ultra-high resolutions. We will also compare our results with relevant FOC observations to help model the larger scale structure and to compare deconvolution techniques. Several exciting problems concerning AGNs (and their jets) can be tackled uniquely by this experiment, including: the relation of optical continuum in AGNs to synchrotron jets; a search for superluminal jet expansion in the optical; and spatial resolution of the broad-line region. Following detailed analysis of the observations proposed here, we would propose repeat observations of those source where structure is detected, in order to search for superluminal motion or other time variability. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. We are observing a subset of 9 AGNs with the TRANS mode of the FGS to study linear radio features on the milliarcsecond scale. We wish to scan along the PA of the jets, at 45 deg to the interferometer axes. We use FGS1 with each of 3 different filters (PUPIL, F550W, and F650W) to obtain spectral resolution, and request the targets to be centered in the FGS FOV (pickle). The choice of FGS1 vs FGS3 is arbitrary; if FGS3 performs better or has a better-calibrated transfer function than FGS1 PLEASE USE FGS3. Each SCAN is repeated 5 times to accommodate possible loss of data due to spacecraft jitter. The scans must adequately bracket the AGN nucleus and milliarcsec structure, at least 0.1 arcsec each side of the nucleus position as specified. It is assumed that the default offsets center the scans on the position specified. The stepsize should be within ~0.1 mas of the requested 0.6 mas. Thus, if the LSB of the encoders is significantly different from 0.3 milliarcsec, please contact the PI. The final selection of actual targets from the set of 9 will be made following the determination of GS availability; tests to set operational GS thresholds are expected in June 1991. In the interim, I REQUEST DETAILED GS AVAILABILITY ANALYSIS (TRYING BOTH FGS1 AND FGS3) IN PREPARATION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
