Abstract GO5019: We propose to survey the bolometric luminosities, colors, and space distribution of the most luminous asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the bulge of M31. We seek to discover whether the bulge of this galaxy is relatively young, of order 10 Gyr rather than 15 Gyr. We will use the WFPC2 and the F675W (broad-R), F814W (broad-I) and F1042M (1 micron) filters. Knowing that F1042M falls on the first continuum point of M giants, we have shown that we can use 1.04 micron fluxes to reliably calculate bolometric magnitudes for these very red stars. Color information from F675W and F814W will permit (1) comparison with Galactic bulge M giants, (2) an estimate of the spread of abundance and (3) increase the accuracy of the bolometric magnitudes. Frames with the damaged HST show signs of resolution to within 3" of the M31 nucleus; The repaired HST should resolve stars close to the nuclei of these galaxies. We will measure bolometric luminosity functions to determine if the populations are intermediate age, and attempt to measure the abundance range for stars near the nucleus of M31. If metals have been lost due to winds, theory predicts that we should see a substantial spread of abundances even near the nucleus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Michael Rich 1770 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. We would like all exposures of M31 to be taken together as one group with only interruptions due to Earth occultations (eg. GROUP 101-105 NO GAP). We would like all exposures to be made at the same position in the sky with the same telescope roll angle (e.g. SAME POS 102-105 AS 101). All long exposures will be cosmic-ray split exactly in half (CR-SPLIT=0.5; CR-TOLERANCE=0.0). The short high-gain (ATD-GAIN=15) exposures will increase the dynamic range of the long low -gain (ATD-GAIN=7) exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
