6. Abstract

This proposal aims to utilize the high resolution imaging capability of the HST's
Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WFPC) to study the central regions of nearby elliptical
galaxies. Specifically we propose to carry out a systematic search for faint stellar
shells and globular clusters. Combining the results with wide--area, ground--based
imaging, we hope to put better constraints on the role of mergers and interactions
in the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies.
