6. Abstract

We propose to measure sizes and surface brightnesses of early- type galaxies from
Cycle 4 WFPC-2 exposures of the very rich galaxy cluster Cl0024+16 (z=0.39).  These
images are part of a program by Turner  et al. to investigate the system of giant
gravitational arclets in this field.  They also contain valuable information on
galaxy morphology which we intend to exploit.  As demonstrated by our WF/PC-1 work
on a z=0.55 galaxy cluster, even pre-refurbishment  HST images contain valuable
photometric information on galaxy shape and structure.  We have developed new
software to extract a variety of quantitative measures of galaxy shapes and surface
brightnesses.  Three nights on the new Keck 10-m telescope have been allocated to us
to obtain velocity dispersions and new redshifts for galaxies in this cluster.
Coupled with the HST archive images, these data will provide the first look at early
-type galaxy scaling relations for redshifts above z~0.2, and thus yield potent new
probes of both galaxy evolution and cosmology.
