Abstract We will be investigating the newly-discovered comet Hale-Bopp [which is officially known as Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)]. This is an 11-orbit program using the WFPC-2, the FOS, and the GHRS. The first 7 orbits will be executed in October 1995 when the comet is ~6.5 AU from both the Sun and Earth. The imaging will be used to measure ephemeris corrections, to place constraints on the nuclear size, and to investigate the near-nucleus coma morphology. The spectra will cover the entire wavelength range from 1295 A to 3300 A and will be used to provide sensitive searches for any molecular, atomic, and ionic emissions. After the first 7 orbits are completed, we will make a final decision on the strategy for the remaining 4 orbits. This comet presents an opportunity for observations over a large range of heliocentric distances, which is a unique occurrence since HST was launched in 1990. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5844( 31) - 07/03/96 15:22 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Below is a description in words of what we'd like to do in this program, which takes 11 orbits. The first 2 visits take 5 orbits and were executed in October 1995. The next 2 visits take 4 orbits and should be executed in mid-March 1996. The final 2 visits take 2 orbits and should be executed during mid- to late-May 1996. We are using the RED side of the FOS for the G270H grating to improve our sensitivity. We use the BLUE side of the FOS for the G190H grating to reduce our susceptibility to grating scattered light. Within a single visit, we request that the same GS pair be used for all orbits, whenever possible. Please note that the REMEMBER OFFSET capability is used in this program. Based on our analysis of the PC images, we will want to uplink pointing corrections for the subsequent spectroscopic observations. Since we may also uplink an offset pointing prior to the PC images, the remember offset table should be setup with two entries: the first is the one to be used prior to the PC images (and which may very well be zero for the 1996 Hale-Bopp observations) and the second is the offset determined from measurements made on the PC images. Both offset commands should be executed prior to the spectrograph observation. The offset values are named "HALBPx" below and there is a pair of such values for each visit. We have defined three different target names, although all actually refer to the nucleus of Hale-Bopp, so that we can more easily keep track of which ephemeris was used for each observation. Visit #1: (September 1995) Failed tue to pointing error. orbit #1: GS ACQ + PC images (four) SEQ visits 1- 2 WITHIN 24H GUIDE TOL 0.2'' for all exposures in this program At least one of the four PC images must be downlinked in real-time so that we can calculate the ephemeris error and then uplink the latter prior to the execution of the spectroscopic observations. Please note that we also want to maintain the option of uplinking an ephemeris correction prior to the first PC image. If this latter requirement creates significant scheduling difficulties, then we might drop it because the Hale-Bopp ephemeris is in pretty good shape now. REQ EPHEM CORR HALBP1 USE OFFSET HALBP2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5844( 31) - 07/03/96 15:22 - [ 15] Visit: 53 Visit Requirements: GUID TOL 0.2" On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Visit should be completed in two orbits. We can't do anything for pointing verification for this visit, but we will want to uplink the offset determined from the WFPC image via the REMEMBER OFFSET table load. THIS VISIT WAS INTENDED TO RE-EXECUTE THE FAILED 03, BUT IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HRS PORTION WOULD NOT BE WORTH REPEATING, SO IT WASN'T. 53 WILL NEVER EXECUTE.
