Abstract Jakobsen et al 1994 have claimed the first detection of Gunn- Peterson absorption by He II in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM). Although likely, they are not certain that the absorption is from the IGM, and they are unsure how much of the absorption is due to He II in individual LymanAlpha clouds which are completely unresolved in their objective prism spectrum with 25 Angstrom resolution. We will obtain spectra of one QSOs with three goals. (1) The spectrum of the QSO will have SNR=10 per 0.57Angstrom, which is enough that we can separate out absorption due to He II in LyAlpha forest lines and diffuse IGM absorption. We should be able to measure Tau _GP, which gives part of the spectrum of the ionizing radiation. (2) We will have the spectral resolution and SNR to see that the GP absorption does not begin for some distance away from the QSO, because it is surrounded by a Stromgren sphere of high ionization. The extent of this sphere depends on the intensity and shape of the spectra of ionizing radiation, both from the QSOs and in the IGM in general. (3) If the sources of energy for the re-ionization of the IGM were relatively scarce (major explosions, QSOs) the IGM will not all be of the same ionization, and we should see less GP absorption in some places in the spectrum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5959( 6) - 06/10/96 18:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe the QSO 1935-69 for the full 16 orbits allocated to us. We will use the HRS in ACCUM mode with the G140L grating. We are using FOS for the ACQ because the object is so faint.
