Abstract The physical cause of the dramatic evolution in quasar space density is a key problem in extragalactic astronomy. Host galaxy properties provide one of the few observational probes of this evolution. Seeing restricts ground-based studies to redshifts less than about 0.2, well below the rapid rise in space density. We propose to exploit the high spatial resolution of the HST to push studies of quasar host galaxies to redshifts 0.5 < z < 0.65. By concentrating on the steep-spectrum radio-loud population we can eliminate orientation biases, and benefit from clear selection criteria. To decouple redshift and luminosity effects, we will use two complete quasar samples: (i) 3C; and (ii) 7C, from our recently completed ground- based project. Since 3C quasars are 100-times more radio luminous than coeval 7C quasars we can identify trends with radio luminosity at a fixed epoch. Also the 7C quasars have similar radio luminosities to well-studied samples of nearby SSQs, so we can identify trends with epoch at a fixed radio luminosity. Such a study can discriminate between competing theories for quasar evolution, and provides a direct test of schemes for AGN unification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5978( 0) - 07/18/95 19:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We require observations with a single setup: the WFPC2, Planetary Camera (PC), and the F675W filter. We have chosen the latter (broad-band) filter, and the redshift range of our targets (0.5 < z < 0.65) so as to ensure that our observations are in the rest-frame spectral region between the OII3727 line and HBeta plus OIII4959/5007 complex. This will ensure that our galaxy images are dominated by continuum light. Working in the red is essential to maximise the contrast between host galaxy light (which should rise sharply longward of the 4000 Angstrom break, and blue light from the quasar. Adequate sampling of the point spread function is essential if we are to remove the quasar accurately so no alternative red setup is suitable. We have opted for a simple programme in which we expose on each quasar three times in a single orbit. Three jittered exposures, separated by non- integer numbers of pixels, will allow comic ray and hot pixel removal, and improve the sampling of the PSF. We have simulated galaxy images on the assumption that a typical orbit allows each of these exposures to last for 20 minutes. On the assumption that the quasar hosts are similar to radiogalaxies at z ~ 0.5 (e.g. R = 20 spread over a de Vaucouleurs profile with an effective radius of 8 kpc) we obtain the image shown in Fig.\ 4a. We have removed an R = 16 quasar (corresponding to the brightest quasar nucleus in our sample) from the centre of this galaxy using the simplest over- subtraction technique of Dunlop et al.^. We will obviously attempt more sophisticated de-convolutions on the real data, but this serves to illustrate the `worst case' scenario. In Fig. 4b we repeat this procedure using a typical exposure (about 2 mins) in the HST snapshot survey of 3C objects. Obviously such data will be insufficient for our puroposes. The figures demonstrate that we should get good images of our galaxies in a single orbit even if they are significantly different from radiogalaxies at the same epoch. As well as total isophotal magnitudes, we can measure structure parameters of the light profiles as per ref. ^6, but for the first time we will be able to do this at high redshift.
