Abstract This is a continuation of our large, long-term project on supernovae, approved by the Cycle 4 TAC for Cycles 5 and 6. Supernovae create the chemical history of the universe, energize the interstellar gas, and are central to efforts to measure the extragalactic distance scale. Our approach is intensive study of a few objects, such as SN 1987A, SN 1992A, SN 1993J in M81, and SN 1994I in M51. Our 1987A observations include images of the debris and the circumstellar rings, the UV spectrum of the supernova and the circumstellar matter. We have used the HST effectively to obtain unique UV spectra and images of bright supernovae in our target-of-opportunity studies. We propose to continue this work in Cycle 5: monitoring the continuing evolution of SN 1987A as the debris nears the ring, scrutinizing the very late-time emission of objects we have observed near maximum light (including a probable light echo), and employing HST for the prompt study of a newly-discovered supernova during Cycle 5. Although we have examined some fascinating objects, the best is yet to come -- we have not yet observed a classic Type II supernova, or a representative member of the SN Ib class, the two types which promise to be most interesting in the UV ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe three different supernovae in Cycle 5: SN1987A, SN 1993J, and a generic supernova, not yet discovered, which we call SN 1995Z. In Cycle 6, we would continue with 87A, 93J (if feasible), 95Z, and introduce a new target- call it ``SN1996X''. Cycle 7 observations would continue with 87A, 95Z (if feasible), and 96X, while introducing a new target. The details for each future cycle will be spelled out in future proposals, but we propose to keep the program at the current level as long as progress is good. In 1993, this program was allocated 40 hours for Cycle 4, and was pencilled in by the TAC for 40 hours in Cycles 5 and 6. We have evaluated the approved Cycle 4 program, using the orbit worksheets in the Cycle 5 Call for Proposals. We find that 40 hours for our program is roughly equivalent to 57 orbits, and that is the target toward which we have worked. Even though SN 1987A spends time in the CVZ, we have no scientific need for observations in the CVZ, and we do not want to introduce the extra scheduling constraint this would entail. For SN 1993J, the CVZ opportunities are attractive: they allow a much more efficient program and there are ample opportunities. SN 1987A: SN 1987A has been the object of our Cycle 1, 2, 3, and 4 observing programs. Our goal is to continue this work, taking advantage of the improvements in telescope performance promised by COSTAR and WFPC2. We have used the FOS to obtain spectra from 1650-9200 angstroms using gratings G190H, G270H, G400H, G570H, and G780H with the red side detector. Since the supernova is close to two bright neighbor stars, we have used a careful offset acquisition, starting with a binary acquisition of the FOS offset star, then offsetting to the supernova debris and peaking up on the target, which should be about 20 mag in 1995. The supernova is surrounded by a ring of circumstellar material, whose spectrum we also wish to measure. After accumulating the supernova spectrum, we would like to move from the supernova debris to the ring (which is less than 1" away) to accumulate a spectrum at that location. It is important to keep these observations grouped so that the ring spectrum is obtained using the telescope position established by the debris spectrum. We know what it takes to get a decent spectrum: 8 orbits each for the debris and the ring. We will do this just once in Cycle 5. The other set of observations for SN 1987A is a set of photometric measures. These data will be used to continue the light curve of SN 1987A, and they need adequate signal to be useful for measurements of the source size and shape using PC1 in WFPC2. These observations will also serve as early warning of interaction between the debris and the ring. The filters are F255W, F336W, F439W, F555W, F658N (for the Nitrogen emission from the ring), 675W, F814W, and F502N (for Oxygen emission from the ring). A second epoch of observations is requested that includes the broad band filters, but not the two narrow filters used to measure the structure of the circumstellar ring. We would like the first set of observations early in Cycle 5. Two sets of the broad-band images and one of the narrow-band images will take a total of 9 orbits. To continue our measures of flux and, especially, expansion with the highest resolution, we will use the FOC with the F275W filter for 1 orbit. This will also allow us to combine our data with the archival images from the GTO teams. SN 1993J: The second supernova we would like to observe is SN 1993J in M81, for which we have FOS data from 1993, we will have images and spectra from 1994, and we plan to have a spectrum from Cycle 5. Our acquisition method is to acquire an offset star using a binary search, offset to the supernova and peak up, then to accumulate the red side spectrum in a sequence of FOS gratings. The gratings are G190H, G270H, and G400H. Our best estimate is that 3 CVZ orbits will be adequate. We would also like to continue photometry of SN 1993J, again using the PC1 chip on WPFC2. The filters are F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, and F814W and 2 CVZ orbits should suffice. SN 1995Z: The most difficult observations will be those of the not yet discovered supernova we call SN 1995Z. Our past experience with SN 1992A, SN 1993J and SN 1994I shows that we can assemble the information needed to make HST observations in a day or two. Our hope is to be placed into the observing schedule within 5 days of notification, and then to follow up with observations 30 days later and 300 days later. While we do not know when this supernova will be discovered, we have developed a plan for observing it. For the earliest spectrum, we use a three level target acquisition on the bright supernova to insure a safe and successful acquisition then accumulate an FOS spectrum in the UV using G190H, G270H, and G400H. The second spectrum, nominally at 30 days, is the same but with increased exposure times. The third spectrum, at 300 days, will use an offset star whose position we will measure in the guide star system coordinates. We will make a binary acquisition of the offset star, move to the supernova, and then peak up before accumulating the spectrum. We also will carry out UV photometry for this bright object, using F 255W and F 336W. This set of observations will be conducted at three times, nominally at the earliest moment, at age 30 days and at age 300 days. SN 1995Z will become a target for late-time observations in Cycle 6. We will follow the spectral evolution, if feasible, and obtain the very late time light curve. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Target of opportunity: SN 1995Z is a target of opportunity for a supernova brighter than mag 14. The probability of having such an event in Cycle 5 is near unity: a recent 8-year span produced 14 suitable supernovae. Early observations are best for studying the UV, which declines rapidly. Observations within 5 days of notification would be adequate. CVZ: SN 1993J spends 100 hours per year in the CVZ. This makes long integrations efficient. One of the great strengths of the SINS collaboration is that it includes observers who have access to a wide variety of instruments and who are dedicated to the study of supernovae. The objects we study in SINS are the objects we would study extensively in any case. Collectively, we have a Target of Opportunity program on IUE, regular access to Keck, the Lick 3m, CTIO, ESO, the MMT, Mc Donald, a long term program at KPNO for supernova photometry on the 2.1 meter, mail-order spectra at the Whipple Observatory 1.5 meter, an automated telescope at Berkeley for photometry and the 1.2 meter at Whipple. In addition, we have good relations with a large number of other photometric observers, and Panagia is part of the program to observe supernovae with the VLA.
