Abstract The imaging capabilities of the FOS, with its red Digicon detector, large dynamic range, and barred apertures, make it an ideal instrument to search for faint brown dwarfs around nearby stars. Although the FOS is generally not recognized as an imaging instrument, it does have unique imaging characteristics. The FOS is the only HST instrument that has a demonstrated occulting bar capability. Simulations show that, by placing the primary star behind the occulting bar, we can observe sub- stellar companions at m_v=22.8 within 0.8" of a typical nearby M dwarf. The ability to distinguish objects over a 10 magnitude range in brightness and at sub-arcsecond separation is unique to the FOS. We will use the FOS in image mode (0.08 arc-second pixels), and utilize its on-board target acquisition capabilities to center the primary star behind the 0.27" bar in the large barred aperture. This program is aimed at increasing the known list of brown dwarf candidates, and at the same time, probing the low end of the stellar luminosity function. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6059( 18) - 07/29/96 11:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose a series of FOS ACQIMAGE observations of our selected sample of candidate stars using the large barred aperture (wide occulter). Each star will be centered in the large aperture using a BINARY Target Acquisition (TA), followed by rotating the barred aperture into position, and performing a PEAK- DOWN TA to position the star behind the 0.27 arcsecond bar. A long ACQIMAGE exposure will be performed to image the expected faint companion(s). The barred aperture will be rotated out of the large aperture and a short ACQIMAGE exposure will be executed to image just the primary star. This is necessary to determine the exact position of the primary star in the large aperture with the barred aperture rotated out of the image plane. From the FOS Instrument Handbook, the ACQIMAGE exposure time to obtain a peak of 300 counts in a scan line would be (64/11) x ACQBINARY log sheet exposure time (~6 times). For a V=17.85 3000 D K black body target, this translates into a 6 minute exposure for a peak of ~300 counts per scan line in the ACQIMAGE. In our nominal 30 minute exposure, we expect to get ~1500 counts in the most densely exposed pixel in our image. The noise is just sqrtN. The same will be true for all pixels. Therefore, the S/N ~ sqrt1500 ~ 39. Close Binary Systems - Brown Dwarf Candidates Target Sp.Cl. Parallax Max. Sep. Delta V Ref. Positional accuracy requires two orientations of the aperture. Due to stepping in the y-direction and the magnitude of the primary star, a faint companion will be lost in the noise if the orbital orientation lies along the large dimension of the mapping diode that images the primary star. We propose to image each star a second time approximately three months after the initial set of observations. HST will roll 90 degrees in 3 months, and thus rotate the barred aperture 90 degrees from the orientation of the initial observation. The second set of observations will reveal any companion hidden behind the bar during the first observation. The two sets of observations will represent a search limit within 0.27 arcsec of a star. From the published brown dwarf orbits, it is possible to orient the aperture to maximize detection for these targets. Three of our targets (GL 65AB, WOLF 424, GL 866AB) have companions comparable in magnitude to the primary star. The exposure times will be shorter than 30 minutes for these three targets. In order to position the components of a binary system in the desired location within the aperture, it would be necessary to specify the phase of the orbit and the ORIENT of the spacecraft. FOC substellar imaging (cycle 4 proposal ID = 5139) will provide complementary information to imaging with the FOS. However, due to the proprietary nature of the data, we have not been able to determine the usefulness of the FOC images for our program. We will combine our FOS ACQIMAGE results with reported ground based IR speckle interferometry and ongoing HST FGS astrometric observations to constrain orbital and stellar parameters. The position angle (north through east) used for the faint companion is 126 +/- 10 degrees. The offset angle from the phase II proposal instructions (for the RED side barred aperture) is 351.8 degrees, but note that the angle that we want for the purpose of this proposal is +/- 90 degrees from that angle (We want the faint companion to stick out normal to the bar, not be behind it). The ORIENT values given above will be valid for the duration of cycle 5. This is one of our test targets. It has a known companion that we wish to image as a proof of concept.
