Abstract HD 98800 is a nearby K star (possibly a dwarf at about 12 pc or maybe a pre-main sequence star at 30 to 35 pc) that is extraordinary because at least 10\ reradiated in the infrared. Basic geometry tells us that that material must form a very thick disk, yet such disks collapse very quickly. How then is the disk's thickness maintained? What kind of star is HD 98800? More precisely, what kind of stars are HD 98800, for there are, in fact, two visible objects, and each of these is a spectroscopic binary. How did this system, which is probably very young, come to be in the immediate solar neighborhood? This proposal seeks HST observations to address the fundamental questions about disk formation, maintenance, and dynamics that the infrared observations of HD 98800 raise. The FGSs will be used to determine parallaxes for both objects. That will unambiguously confirm or deny that the two visible objects are physically related and will provide luminosities for both of them, thereby establishing evolutionary status. The GHRS will be used to obtain spectra of both visible objects to gain supporting evidence for their physical association by looking at the strength of Mg\ ii\ 2800 Angstrom\ emission. Finally, WFPC2 will be used to attempt to directly image the disk itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6062( 7) - 11/27/95 15:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ FGS Observations: To determine the parallaxes of the two visible objects we need to use the FGSs in POS mode. Fritz Benedict is our expert in this area and he has determined that there are 6 reference objects nearby that are brighter than V=16. We will need three visits 6 months apart of two orbits each, hence the overlap into Cycle 6. This should provide one milliarcsec precision for the parallaxes. GHRS Observations: The Small Science Aperture of the GHRS is 0.22 arcsec square, easily allowing each of the visible objects to be observed independently of the other. A ten-minute exposure on both objects will provide adequate detectability of the Mg ii 2800 Angstrom\ lines at the strength we anticipate (which is high) with G270M, and that can easily fit within an orbit when the acquisition and overheads are included. WFPC2 Observations: These are the most difficult to define, for we cannot be sure exactly what we're looking for until we find it. We recognize that detecting what may be very faint surface emission close to fairly bright stars won't be easy, especially when there are a pair of stars to contend with. But we feel it is senseless to put an effort into understanding the disk structure of HD 98800 without at least trying to actually detect the disk itself. The WFPC2 exposures we want are exploratory, so that if we find something we'll come back for a more quantitative study at a later date. Given that the disk light is scattered, detection may be more likely in polarized light, and we have asked for two visits to obtain two different orientations of the polarizers. The WFPC2 images will also be valuable for determining the precise positions of the targets and reference stars for the GHRS and FGS observations. Ground- based data exist, of course, but using WFPC2 images for this purpose will ensure that our coordinates have both high precision and accuracy and will protect against acquisition failures. Our WFPC2 scenario proceeds as follows: beginitemize em First we get multicolor observations to study the stellar components in the field. We have chosen the narrow-band filters F658N and F953N because the stars are bright; these should pick up stellar continuum. Integration times for the two filters are 0.60 and 0.80 seconds, respectively. Included in this set are the F439W observations, which can then provide good colors for both visible objects and perhaps evidence of the companions we now see only spectroscopically (they may be barely resolvable if HD 98800 is a dwarf at 12 pc). em Second we search for the disk. Here we use the F439W filter (``B''), both with- and without the polarizer. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Using the polarizer may make it easier to see light scattered from the disk in the vicinity of the bright star light, but at the same time the background in broad regions of the field is ``enhanced.'' We have elected to hedge our bets by trying both kinds of exposures, and the short exposure without the polarizer should help us calibrate the exposures with the polarizer. The exposures have been broken down into shorter segments for cosmic-ray removal. Obtaining observations at two different roll angles will help to disentangle effects are confirm potential detections. enditemize We ask that the WFPC2 images be obtained in two separate visits. Their timing should be such that the orientations at the two times differ by about 60 to 90 degrees. The first WFPC2 image should preceed either the GHS or FGS observations so as to allow high-precision coordinates to be determined for the targets and reference stars. POS and TRANS in same orbit. POS mode observations near end of each orbit can be deleted in order to schedule during the required times. Schedule is important, since target star will have maximimum parallax factor near these times.
