Abstract Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) have been found in every globular cluster in which an appropriate search has been made. However, details on their nature still are sparse. In particular, nothing is known about their rotation rates and kinematic properties, diagnostics which are crucial in investigating scenarios for their formation and evolutionary histories. We propose to use the GHRS to obtain spectra of the three brightest BSS in 47 Tuc. Analysis of a strong Mg II resonance doublet will allow precise estimates of both the rotation rates and radial velocities of these BSS. Theories of BSS formation involving mergers predict that, at least initially, the merged star should be rotating very rapidly. On the other hand, there could exist efficient mechanisms to remove angular momentum and spin down the stars. Measurements of rotation rates will distinguish between these extremes. Precise radial velocities will reveal if dynamical interactions have taken place and if a significant fraction of BSS reside in spectroscopic binaries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We plan to obtain UV (G270M, R = 25,000) GHRS spectra through the 0.25 arcsec aperture of the three brightest BSS in 47 Tuc, with UV(2200 Angstrom) magnitudes of 16, 16.3, and 16.75. Following the guidelines in the GHRS Instrument Handbook, we find that the count rates are 6.75, 5.12, and 3.39 * 10^-3 counts/sec/diode, respectively. To achieve S/N = 5, taking into account a dark current of 0.01 counts/sec/diode, these correspond to exposure times of 155, 245, and 480 minutes, or 2, 3, and 6 orbits, for a total of 11 orbits, including all overheads. Acquisition is not a problem; the targets are the brightest objects in the cluster in the UV and are well enough isolated that the standard onboard acquisition strategy will succeed using the 0.25 arcsec aperture. There are no special calibration requirements; standard pipeline wavelength and flux calibrations will suffice for our analysis. We also plan to obtain optical (G400H, R = 1,500) FOS spectra through the 0.26 arcsec aperture of 7 BSS in 47 Tuc, with Johnson B magnitudes of 15.1, 15.5, 15.8, 16.2, 16.3, 16.4, and 16.7. Following the guidelines in the FOS Instrument Handbook, we find that the count rates are 5.5, 3.8, 2.9, 2.0, 1.8, 1.7, and 1.3 counts/sec/diode, respectively. To achieve S/N = 45, and discounting the dark current of 0.01 counts/sec/diode, these correspond to exposure times of 355, 513, 676, 977, 1081, 1170, and 1551 seconds, for a total of of 3 orbits, including all overheads.
