Abstract We propose to obtain a Wide Field Camera image of Jupiter using the UV Wood's filter to delineate the spatial morphology of the Jovian aurora at the time that the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) on the Astro-2 space shuttle mission is observing the far UV (500-1800A) spectrum of the north polar aurora. The two nearly- simultaneous observations are completely synergistic in that the unique HUT spectroscopic capability is complementary to that of HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. From the experience of the WFPC2 IDT, single orbit will be sufficient to obtain individual exposures of approx. 600 seconds that will for good S/N, cosmic-ray removal, and will not be seriously affected by Jovian rotation. The observing sequence consists of a short F336W image for pointing knowledge, then equal length exposures using F160BW and then F160BW+F130LP. The pointing is likely to have Jupiter centered on WF3, with the Wood's filter partially rotated to minimize vingetting on WF3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The major requirement is that the observation occur during the ASTRO-2 mission which now scheduled for launch near local midnight on 2 Mar 95. The mission is planned as a 16-day mission. Due to the uncertainty in shuttle launch dates, the following scenario will be scheduled: a single orbit on 9 March followed by another single orbit 2 weeks later on 23 March. This will accommodate launch slips up to 20 days. As for the HUT observation itself, it will be "replanned" into the Astro-2 timeline once the HST observations are scheduled. The requirement of near-simultaneity can be met if the two observations are scheduled within a half-Earth orbit (approx. 48 minutes) of each other. The second requirement is that the observation be made with the Jovian north polar aurora centered near the sub-Earth point. Following added on 2-1-95 by AJR: Additonally, it would be beneficial to capture Io in these images. A second target and set of exposures are specified to include Io. These should be scheduled in place of the "no Io" observations only if it is easy to do so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
