Abstract This proposal is to measure the extended atmosphere of Saturn's rings by WFPC2 images taken during times of ring plane crossing in 1995. We will discriminate between elevated dust and possible OH emission by taking images within the OH bands near 3100 A, a near-by band for scaling and subtraction of scattered and ring light, and far-red images for scaling of dust above the ring plane. We will take test exposure images during the May event, and our "real" images during the August event with exposure times based on the results of the May images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6216( 23) - 10/05/95 21:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are looking for OH emission at 3100 angstroms extended vertically above and below the ring plane. To see this faint emission the rings must be close to edge-on. Neither F300W or F336W has an optimal bandpass for this observation, but the crossed combination of the two is actually a good match for the expected emission wavelenths. Thus we will experiment with filters and exposure times during the May crossing, and thus optimize observations at the time of the August crossing. We are observing the rings on the PC. Saturn has been deliberately shifted out of the PC aperture by our POS TARG command, and thus the Feasibility diagnostic is of no concern. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- The crossed filter combination of F336W+F300W provides the best spectral element to isolate OH emission from the scattered continuum light of the rings and the planet. We plan to use F336W+F300W, but no direct measurement of throughput exist for this filter combination. We request observations of a flux standard star with the F336W+F300W crossed filters. This observation is needed in order to assess how much continuum light is passed by these crossed filters, and thus what our limiting sensitivity to OH emission will be. This observation could be added to calibration proposals such as 5563 or 5572.
