Abstract The high spatial resolution of WFPC-2 will allow an extension of groundbased observations of interactions between Io and the Jovian plasma torus. While Voyager and Ulysses spacecraft have given us in situ snapshots of the state of the torus and identified atomic and molecular species not seen from the earth, groundbased observations over a period of years have provided most of our understanding of its origin and evolution. We will use narrow-band images to observe neutral and ionized species on spatial scales smaller than the diameter of Io, just beyond the reach of groundbased observatories, in order to understand the origin and evolution of the plasma torus. HST resolution offers the unique opportunity to observe and define the `missing link' between Io's surface activity (volcanism, resurfacing, and generation of a tenuous atmosphere) and the Jovian plasma torus (which exhibits spatial structure near Io which is unresolved from the ground and variations in density and brightness on time scales from weeks to years). Cycle 4 WFPC2 images showed an irregular distribution of the far-UV airglow O and S emissions on Io's trailing hemisphere that we need to further characterize in terms of the geometry and other parameters of the interaction of the atmosphere and plasma torus. A new image of the O and S far-UV emissions will be obtained in series with one of the above visible images of the Na, S+, and S++ emissions from Io's immediate vicinity also dependent on the torus parameters. Near-UV WFPC2 images of Io's leading and trailing hemispheres will measure the surface distribution of SO2 frost and other components, and of atmospheric SO2. The leading hemisphere will be imaged for the first time in the near-UV, and the trailing hemisphere will be imaged again to look for temporal variations and to combine with GO near-UV spectra isolating two regions on this hemisphere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6218( 5) - 02/19/96 22:18 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This WFPC2 GTO program consists of 7 visits. Visits 1-4 consist visible PC images of the Io-torus with Io at four different orbital longitudes (~ 45, 135, 225, 315 deg). Electron-excited emissions from the torus are faint compared to reflected continuum from both Jupiter and its Galilean satellites, even as seen in narrowband filters. Visibility of the Io/torus interaction region therefore depends on the orbital phases of Io as well as the other Galilean satellites. Images will be obtained with F953N, F673N and F588N, that contain both the torus line emissions and continuum background scattered and diffracted from Jupiter and its satellites. With Io in the field of view, its surface brightness becomes the major factor in choosing exposure times. Exposure times are bracketed by the effects of surface-reflected continuum at the short end and need for S/N in atomic emissions at the long end. The HST should be rolled to place the Jovian rotational axis as near as possible to parallel with the CCD columns in PC1, in order to minimize diffracted light from Jupiter. The bright disk of Io will cause blooming in the PC1 CCD. During visit number 3 for visible PC images of the Io-torus, an additional HST orbit will follow to take WF3 images with F160W (and F380W for pointing information). The purpose is to compare the morphology of the different types of emissions. Before these WF3 images, we will observe Io-torus in the PC, and then offset Io to WF3. (This PC observation will depend on guide star availability.) The far-UV detection is very difficult, and we need to maximize the signal as much as possible. This is possible by observing Io when it is immersed in the densest part of the torus, at the crossing of the planes of the torus and Io's orbit at System III longitudes 292 and 112 deg. (This has been specified with a Jupiter's CML of 292 and 112 deg as seen from Io.) For visit 5, we wish to observe Io (visible PC images) in eclipse but as far as possible from the bright Jovian disk. This visit should be scheduled in the early part of Cycle 5 in order to take advantage of Jupiter's 1995 opposition. There is about a 1 hour window between the time when Io emerges from behind Jupiter and when it exits Jupiter's shadow. The scheduling trick will be to identify an HST orbit where 45 minutes of Io visibility coincide with the window during which Io is observable in shadow. There are lots of events to choose from, so this should be schedulable if the orbit we need is identified as soon as possible and then reserved for this program. Not all eclipses are equal, since the apparent separation of Io from Jupiter during egress varies throughout the year. Larger separations are better, for they reduce scattered light from Jupiter and increase the duration of the event. These considerations drive us to prefer an eclipse within +/- 1 month of August 20 1995. Finally, a specific roll angle for HST is also requested to minimize the effects of diffraction spikes and blooming. The last 2 visits (6 and 7), comprising 1 orbit each, will take PC images with the near- UV filters F218W, F255W, F300W, F336W, and F380W, of Io's leading and trailing hemispheres (observed at east and west elongation). We have three scheduling constraints for these observations: i) The visits should be separated by at most a few days to compare the hemispheres the closest possible in time without changes in the volcanic activity. ii) The visit for the trailing hemisphere to be consecutive to the two exposures remaining for the Cycle 3 GO program 4600 (Clarke et al), which consist of FOS near-UV spectra with the 0.25" aperture isolating the Loki volcano (target IO-W-LOKI) and a dark region (target IO-W- DARK) on the trailing hemisphere. The FOS data will sample the same near-UV region as our images, and helping enormously in the image interpretation. iii) These visits should also be scheduled the closest possible in time to the GO program 6028 of Spencer et al. for WFPC2 visible mapping of Io's surface. (This was of a formal collaboration requested in the GO program.) Real Time Justification ----------------------- The visit (03) including the F160W image of Io's far-UV emissions needs to be scheduled for a specific geometry with respect the Jupiter's CML (as seen from Io) in order to have Io immersed in the densest part of the plasma torus and get the maximum possible signal. This occurs when the torus System III longitude, and therefore Jupiter's CML with respect to Io is at 292 and 112 deg (within +/- 30 deg). This visit (and thus the first 4 visits) should be made close to opposition to minimize the geocoronal H-Lyman alpha background. The three scheduling constraints for the visits for near-UV imaging of Io are needed to combine the data on Io's surface and atmosphere from three different HST programs, to optimize the science that can be derived from both the programs, for (WFPC2-FOS) cross-calibration. Scheduling the observations the closest possible in time avoids comparison Io data with different volcanic activity.
