Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Andrew S. Wilson 3470 USA (410) 338 5041 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract We propose to complete an investigation of a model of Seyfert 2 galaxies in which a dusty, obscuring torus of material hides a Seyfert 1 nucleus. This model is supported by: 1) morphological evidence, which comprises bi-conical regions of high excitation gas symmetrically disposed about the nucleus and with axis coincident with the radio axis; 2) energetic considerations, from which the emission-line gas along the cone's axis is found to be illuminated by much more intense ionizing radiation than is inferred by extrapolation of the observed IUE/soft X-ray continua; and 3) spectropolarimetric observations, which reveal a Seyfert 1-like broad line spectrum when the Seyfert 2 is viewed in linearly polarized light. We shall obtain emission-line and continuum images of nine bright Seyferts, selected to have very strong emission lines, extended high excitation gas in ground-based observations, and "linear" (double, triple or jet-like) radio sources on the arc sec scale. These images will be used to a) determine the incidence and properties of "ionizing cones", b) investigate the detailed relationship between the jet-like radio sources and the ionized gas, c) search for direct evidence of dusty tori through reddening effects on the continuum images, and d) investigate the ionization balance of the emission-line knots, as a probe of anisotropic nuclear ionizing radiation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. Each galaxy will be imaged in 4 filters with the WFPC2. The filters are chosen to include [OIII] 5007, H-alpha + [NII] 6548, 6584 and their adjacent continua. The 13" field of view permitted by the Linear Ramp Filters is ideal for these compact nebulosities. Published positions for the targets are accurate to a few tenths of an arcsec, so a blind acquisition is sufficient. Exposures will be split to discriminate against particle events. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The HST is required to obtain adequate spatial resolution for mapping out the circumnuclear emission lines and continuum. Most of ASW's research over the past decade has been concerned with observations and modelling of the spatially resolved, circumnuclear properties of Seyfert galaxies. This work has involved direct imaging in emission lines and continuum at sites with excellent seeing, spatially resolved spectroscopy (long-slit/Fabry Perot interferometry) and radio mapping of large samples with the VLA. GB is a postdoc at STScI who has worked on searches for massive black holes in AGN using stellar velocity dispersions. TMH has worked extensively on all types of AGN's, especially with the observational techniques of optical spectroscopy, direct imaging and radio mapping. JHK's work on the dynamical, thermal and ionization structures of the clouds in AGN's is continuing; in particular his studies of the nature of molecular gas in the torus and the possibility that a wind is driven off the inner edge, with thermal instabilities leading to emission line clouds, will be highly relevant. GKM has recently studied the IRAS properties of Seyferts and quasars and has long been involved with the relationship between emission-line gas and radio continuum emission in radio galaxies. We feel our team is well balanced between observational and theoretical expertises. For 6 of the 7 galaxies in our program, there are no imaging observations whatsoever in the approved GO and GTO Observing Programs. Mkn 34 is being observed with the FOC through five filters, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. All objects have sub-arcsec optical and radio positions. A major part of the reductions will take place at STScI and Leiden, where SDAS/IRAF runs on workstations and a mini-supercomputer. The latter will be valuable for computer intensive deconvolutions. GKM will obtain travel money from Leiden University and GKM and TMH have been awarded a NATO research travel grant. Graduate students from Univ. Maryland (through ASW), Johns Hopkins University (through TMH and JK) and Leiden University (through GKM) will be involved. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
