Abstract We are making a comprehensive study of the emission-line gas in the narrow-lined region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN), concentrating on Seyfert 2 galaxies (initially NGC3393) to avoid confusion with the spectrum of the broad line region (BLR). We are using a wide variety of the HST instruments, to ensure a comprehensive and high-quality data set. These data should immediately allow us to address several important, inter-related questions about AGN: a. What is the velocity field in the innermost part of the NLR? b. Where does the reddening occur in AGN? c. What is the chemical composition of the gas associated with the AGN? d. How do the Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 continuum sources differ? e. Do most Seyfert 2 galaxies contain "hidden" BLRs? We have used the FOS and PC to study extended structure in a few strong lines This has given us information on the structure, ionisation, and peculiar motions in the core of the galaxy. However, the nuclear morphology is more complex than we expected. We therefore intend to take an image in the UV, using WFPC2 to observe nucleus and offset star. From this we can calculate an accurate offset to obtain FOS spectra of whatever structure we detect. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6333( 7) - 06/05/96 11:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to make a comprehensive study of the Narrow Lined Region (NLR) of the seyfert galaxy NGC3393. Specifically, we were awarded HST time to try to answer the questions: a. Following our reassesment to take account of the spherical aberration problem, we had planned to use WFC, PC, FOS, and GHRS. The GHRS observations were requested on the expectation that most of the NLR emission would come from a nearly unresolved source coincident with the continuum nucleus, and that the best way to differentiate between general inflow or outflow in the NLR therefore would be to use high spectral resolution (e.g. GHRS) to look for asymmetries in the Ly-alpha emission profile. However, we have obtained a series of short early acquisition exposures with WFC and PC. These very clearly show that the NLR emission comes from two regions which straddle the nucleus. There is no NLR emission from the nucleus itself. We therefore wish to abandon the GHRS observations, since they won't tell us anything, and instead use that spacecraft time to (1) take WFPC2 exposures (in order to study this newly-discovered morphology at higher signal:noise), and (2) take FOS spectra of the brightest emission-line knot and also of the nuclear continuum source (since what we had previously thought was one target is now two targets). All the above has now been completed apart from FOS spectra of the nucleus. Although no continuum was detected we believe that line emission is still likely. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Since the nucleus is not bright, we propose the following procedure: 1. FOS/BL (ACQ/BINARY) acquisition of the offset star. 2. Offset and FOS/BL (ACCUM) spectra (G160L) of the knot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: Dr. Andrew Cooke*Institute for Astronomy*Royal Observatory*Blackford Hill*Edinburgh EH9 3HJ*United Kingdom Ship Via: UPS Email: A.Cooke@roe.ac.uk , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6333( 7) - 06/05/96 11:03 - [ 3] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 STAR-OFFSET STAR, F3-F9 RA= 10H 48M 22.1045S +/- 0.001S, J2000 V = 15.5 DEC= -25D 09' 16.110" +/- 0.001", PLATE-ID=00GU Comments: FOS/BL ACQ/BIN with this object has been successful before (see proposal 3982) 2 NGC3393- GALAXY,SPIRAL,SEYFERT RA= 10H 48M 23.5069S +/- 0.01S, J2000 Z=0.013 F(5500.0)=17.0+/-4.0e-17 CENTRED DEC= -25D 09' 43.382" +/- 0.1", F(2300.0)=3.80+/-0.8e-15 PLATE-ID=00GU F-LINE(4959.0)=4.46+/-0.9e-14 W-LINE(4959.0)=7.1 F-LINE(6562.0)=3.45+/-0.7e-14 W-LINE(6562.0)=9.4 F-LINE(3727.0)=26.5+/-5.0e-15 W-LINE(3727.0)=5.3 Comments: Inner spiral structure extending +/- 7 arcsec from centre 6333( 7) - 06/05/96 11:03 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Requirements: On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 STAR-OFFSET FOS/BL ACQ/BIN 4.3 MIRROR 1 33 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 2 ARY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 STAR-OFFSET FOS/BL ACQ/PEA 0.25-PA MIRROR SEARCH-SIZE-X=3,SEARCH-SIZE-Y=3, 1 4 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 3 K IR-A SCAN-STEP-X=0.172, SCAN-STEP-Y=0.172 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 NGC3393-CEN FOS/BL ACCUM 0.5-PAI G160L 1600 STEP-PATT=SINGLE 1 8190 S TRED R-A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6333( 7) - 06/05/96 11:03 - [ 5] Summary Form for Proposal 6333 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations FOS/BL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes ACQ/BINARY ACQ/PEAK ACCUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters SEARCH-SIZE-X=3 SEARCH-SIZE-Y=3 SCAN-STEP-X=0.172 SCAN-STEP-Y=0.172 STEP-PATT=SINGLE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category GO/CAR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scientific Category AGN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements ONBOARD ACQ FOR 2 ONBOARD ACQ FOR 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spectral Elements MIRROR G160L ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target Names STAR-OFFSET NGC3393-CENTRED ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
