6. Abstract

We propose to obtain SNAP images of the host galaxies of Type Ia supernovae
discovered by the Calan/Tololo and q_0 surveys. The B images (in the host galaxy
rest frame) will be used to study the correlation of galaxian type with intrinsic
supernova luminosity and to locate the supernovae in general environmental
structures in the galaxy.

  Observations Description
  ------------------------

     We waive the 1 year proprietary data-rights period. We have 18 objects with
     0.04<z<0.12 and expect to have ~ 5 new supernovae at z ~ 0.5 from the q_0
     survey in the next year. We are requesting to use WFPC2 in SNAP mode. For the
     nearby sample, the galaxy at the SN position will be placed on the WF CCDs. We
     will use the HST with no guide star (drift rate 1.4 mas s^-1, pointing accuracy
     of 14") to minimize the overhead time. In this mode, we request 3 exposures in
     B of 100s. These will have image smear of 0.14". According to the WFPC2 manual,
     the telescope overhead and exposure times are: 100s (rounded to 120s) + 3 min =
     5 min, 100s (rounded to 120s) + 2 min = 4 min, 100s (rounded to 120s) + 2 min =
     4 min,= 13 minutes per field, for 6 fields. For the distant sample, it is
     critical to have high resolution to see details in the galaxy. The drift rate
     for single star guiding is 0.38 +/- 0.06 mas s^-1. We will observe for 200s
     with the ``wide'' R filter, which is the equivalent of the B filter in the
     galaxian rest frame. The image smear will be 0.08". With this setup: 6m44s min
     single guide star acquisition, 200s (rounded to 240s) + 3 min = 7 min first
     exp, 200s (rounded to 240s) + 2 min = 6 min second exp(no filter movement), =
     20 minutes per field, for 17 fields. In their discovery of normal galaxies
     around the QSOs PHL 909 and PG 0052+251, Bahcall, Kirhakos, & Schneider (1995,
     preprint) discuss the visibility of faint galaxian structures in WFPC images.
     They find that 200s is a minimum to see normal galaxian features while with
     500s, the features are easily visible (their Figure 2). The exposures proposed
     here should be sufficient for galaxy classification purposes.

  Real Time Justification
  -----------------------

     We have a large number of ground-based images for these galaxies because they
     were observed on the CTIO 4m telescope as part of the Calan/Tololo supernova
     search. We will also have deep photometry of the q_0 fields in order to derive
     the light curves. All fields should have local B sequences in them from our
     ground-based data.
