Abstract We propose to obtain snapshot images with the WFPC2 of 25 Wolf -Rayet stars suspected from ground-based imaging to be multiple. Wolf Rayet (WR) stars are believed to be He-rich stars which are the short-lived, evolved descendents of the most massive O stars, in which the products of CNO burning (WN type) or He burning (WC type) have been brought to the surface. Their powerful stellar winds produce rapidly expanding atmospheres. Because of their strong, broad emission lines, it is difficult to determine WR stars' intrinsic characteristics: luminosities and masses. Studied to the limit of ground-based telescopes, all of our proposed targets show interesting spectra, peculiar morphologies, and/or slight elongations indicative of companion/cluster associations. HST imaging of these objects would provide unique information on not only the objects themselves, but on the intervening interstellar medium, galactocentric distance constraints, massive star evolution, and evolutionary connections between WR subtypes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to determine if many, or most, WR stars have previously unknown companions and/or are located in compact groups. To accomplish this, we propose to obtain broad-band observations in each of U, B, and V filters with the WFPC2. The exposure times will be tailored to allow the brightest pixel to achieve a minimum S/N of 95 and a maximum of an 80% saturation (assuming a peak photon hit to pixel center). This will allow us to achieve photometry to the 5- 10% level, and permit maximum depth without compromising the angular resolution or the derived photometry. This strategy should allow for greatest possible detection of companion objects within the close environs of the WR star. We should easily accomplish all three exposures plus overheads within the time allowed for a snapshot sequence. From such exposures, we will be able to create a color-color diagram which will enable us to determine the reddening of clusters, thus giving accurate intrinsic colors, distances, and luminosities. Once these have been determined, it is relatively straight-forward to derive approximate masses of the most luminous (non-WR) stars, and association age.
