Abstract We propose to investigate the currently favored model of Seyfert galaxies, in which a torus of gas and obscuring dust surrounds a Seyfert 1 nucleus. Seyfert 1 galaxies are considered to be viewed ``pole-on'' and Seyfert 2's ``edge- on'', so that our view of the broad line region is blocked in the latter objects. We have recently finished the first ground -based optical emission-line survey of a complete sample of Seyfert galaxies. Surprisingly, a large fraction of the Seyfert 2 galaxies show no evidence of the bi-conical or linear emission-line structures expected in the unified model. Rather, the morphologies of their high excitation gas are ``halo- like'', suggesting this gas is ionized by an isotropic component of nuclear ionizing radiation. Unfortunately, previous HST observations have been heavily biassed towards the small fraction of Seyfert 2's for which ground-based observations had already provided considerable support for the unified model. We now wish to observe a complete, unbiassed sample to see whether or not the structures expected in the unified model are present, but on too small a scale for ground -based resolutions. Specifically, the HST images will be used to a) determine the incidence and properties of ``ionizing cones'', b) investigate the relationship between the radio sources and the ionized gas, c) search for direct evidence of dusty tori through reddening of the continuum images, and d) investigate the ionization balance of the emission-line knots, as a probe of anisotropic nuclear ionizing radiation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6419( 4) - 04/02/96 11:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Each galaxy will be imaged in 4 filters with the WFPC2. The filters are chosen to include OIIILambda5007, HAlpha + NIILambdaLambda6548, 6584 and their adjacent continua. For the two galaxies with recessional velocity under 1,000 kms, we shall use F502N and F658N for the on-band images with the PC. For all other on-band images, the Linear Ramp Filters will be used centered at the appropriate wavelength. The 13^ field of view permitted by the Linear Ramp Filters is ideal for these compact nebulosities. Off-band images will be obtained with F547M and F791W. Using this medium- and wide- band filter reduces the off-band exposure times to less than 1/10 of the on-band, and allows most of the available observing time in a single orbit to be devoted to the on-band images. At the low redshifts being observed, contamination of F547M by OIIILambda5007 is negligible. Since the (narrow) lines are always narrower than the passbands of the filters, the number of electrons/beam area is: Signal = N = 2.2x10^12 t(secs) (QT) Lambda (Angstrom ) B(erg cm^-2 s^-1 beam^-1) The number of electrons of noise/beam area is: Noise = (N + n(RN)^2)^0.5 where n is the effective number of pixels per beam area and RN is the read noise. The line flux was taken from Mulchaey's flux calibrated ground-based images. To calculate the integrated line brightness, B, we assumed these fluxes referred to a 1 (arc sec)^2 area. In fact 1) the lines are spatially extended in ground based observations for all galaxies and 2) the lines are likely to be concentrated in knots in the HST images. Effect 1) tends to decrease the brightness and 2) to increase it, so our assumption may not be too bad. QT was taken from the updated information in the WFPC2 handbook. When more than one emission line is in the filter bandpass (i.e. HAlpha + NII LambdaLambda 6548, 6584 in the red filters), the products (QT) x B were summed. Demanding a Signal/Noise = 50 in the line(s) yields the exposure times. To calculate the exposure time which would lead to saturation by a central point continuum source, we assumed the V magnitude of this source is 2.5 mags fainter than the V magnitude given in the ``Observing Summary" section. Most of our galaxies are Seyfert 2's, which tend to have resolved continuum nuclei in ground-based observations. Therefore, the quoted V mags will be ``resolved out" by the HST observations. Using our assumption, we calculated the exposure times to give a mean number of electrons/pixel = 10^4 in the point continuum source. The exposure time used (for both ``on-" and ``off-band" images) is the smaller of this number and that which would provide a signal/noise = 50 in the emission line. The average measured OIII Lambda5007 flux of the galaxies in our sample is 4 x 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^ -1 (Table 1 gives individual galaxy fluxes). The assumed brightness is then 8 x 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (beam area)^-1. In a 5 min exposure, we expect N = 2440 elects and noise = 50 elects, for a signal to noise of 49. The two on-band exposures will be increased to roughly 10 mins each to fill all the allowed time per orbit. We already know from experience that such exposure times give splendid line images of these bright Seyferts. Longer exposures will be possible for the three galaxies in the CVZ. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Three of our objects are at declinations where CVZ would be advantageous, as indicated in the Observation Summary section. We have made new, unpublished VLA observations at 3.6cm in `A' configuration (which provides 0.2 arc sec resolution) of the 11 accessible galaxies in our sample, and will compare the maps with the HST images.
